''Demons in the Spring'' is a collection of twenty short stories by Chicago author Joe Meno. Released by Punk Planet books in 2008, with illustrations by twenty artists including Charles Burns, Archer Prewitt, Ivan Brunetti, Jay Ryan, Paul Hornschemeier, Anders Nilsen, Geoff McFedtridge, Kelsey Brookes, Kim Hiorthoy, Chris Uphues, Caroline Hwang, Rachell Sumpter, kozyndan, Evan Hecox, and Cody Hudson. Joe Meno
Joe Meno (born 1974) is an American novelist, writer of short fiction, playwright, and music journalist based in Chicago. Biography After attending Columbia College Chicago, Meno spent time working as a flower delivery truck driver and art therapy teacher at a juvenile detention center. His first novel ''Tender as Hellfire'' was published when he was only 24 and received strong reviews from sources like Library Journal. His short fiction has appeared in literary magazines like '' TriQuarterly'', '' Ninth Letter'', '' Joyland: A hub for short fiction'', and ''Other Voices''. He currently teaches fiction writing at Columbia College Chicago. He is a frequent contributor to ''Punk Planet'' magazine, where his comic strip ''Iceberg Town'' is featured. Punk Planet
''Punk Planet'' was a 16,000 print run punk zine, based in Chicago, Illinois, that focused most of its energy on looking at punk subculture rather than punk as simply another genre of music to which teenagers listen. In addition to covering music, ''Punk Planet'' also covered visual arts and a wide variety of progressive issues — including media criticism, feminism, and labor issues. The most notable features in ''Punk Planet'' were the interviews and album reviews. The interviews generally ran two or three pages, and tended to focus on the motivations of the artist (or organizer, activist, or whoever) being interviewed. ''Punk Planet'' aimed to be more inclusive than the well-known zine '' Maximum Rock and Roll'', and tried to review nearly all the records it received, so long as the record label wasn't owned or partially owned by a major label. Charles Burns (cartoonist)
Charles Burns (born September 27, 1955) is an American cartoonist and illustrator. His early work was published in a Sub Pop fanzine, and he achieved prominence in the early issues of ''RAW''. His graphic novel ''Black Hole'' won the Harvey Award. Career Comics Charles Burns' earliest works include illustrations for the Sub Pop fanzine, and '' Another Room Magazine'' of Oakland, but he came to prominence when his comics were published for the first time in early issues of ''RAW'', the avant-garde comics magazine founded in 1980 by Françoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman. In 1982, Burns did a die-cut cover for RAW #4. Kim Hiorthøy
Kim Hiorthøy (born March 17, 1973) is a Norwegian electronic musician, graphic designer, illustrator, filmmaker and writer. Biography Hiorthøy was born and raised in Trondheim, Norway, and studied at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art (1991–96) as well as the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1999–2000). During his tenure at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, Hiorthøy spent a year abroad in 1994 to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York. There he worked extensively with Cinematographer Mott Hupfel. Currently, he lives and works in Berlin, Germany. A fictionalized version of Hiorthøy is a character in Erlend Loe's novel '' L''. Career Music Hiorthøy began making music while attending the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art; he worked in the academy's sound studio until he left school and purchased his own equipment. Kelsey Ross Brookes (born 1978) is an artist who resides in San Diego, California. He is associated with RVCA, Pictures On Walls in London, Lazarides Gallery in London, as well as a number of other ongoing projects. Early life Born in 1978 in Denver, Colorado. Kelsey spent 2002 surfing and living out of a car in Australia. Upon returning from Australia he moved from Colorado to San Diego, California. Archer Prewitt
Archer Prewitt (born 1963 in Frankfort, Kentucky) is an American musician and cartoonist associated with the independent music scene in Chicago, Illinois. Biography Music Prewitt enrolled in the Kansas City Art Institute and began drumming in the band Tunnel Dogs and then Mudhead. Archer also played bass in Kansas City local favorites the Bangtails. A song by the Bangtails appears on the 2020 compilation ''Strum & Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987''. He then co-founded The Coctails, who moved from Kansas City to Chicago after their first album (1989) and went on to release six albums in all by the time they played their last show on New Year's Eve 1995/96. Anders Nilsen (born 1973) is an American cartoonist who lives in Los Angeles, California. Biography Nilsen graduated with an art degree from the University of New Mexico in 1996.Nilsen, Anders. Rachell Sumpter
Rachell Sumpter (born November 18, 1982, in Los Angeles, California) is an internationally recognized illustrator and artist working in Seattle, Washington. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design, Sumpter's exhibitions have included solo exhibitions at the Richard Heller Gallery (Los Angeles), Hosfelt Gallery (New York City) Foley Gallery and Motel (Portland). Laura Owens
Laura Owens (born 1970) is an American painter, gallery owner and educator. She emerged in the late 1990s from the Los Angeles art scene. She is known for large-scale paintings that combine a variety of art historical references and painterly techniques. She lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
