Democrația-class Minesweeper
The ''Democrația''-class minesweepers were a class of four minesweepers of the Romanian Navy, based on the design of the German M40 minesweeper but with different armament. They were built at the Galați shipyard and launched in 1943, being armed with two German 88 mm naval guns. Work on them was disrupted by the Soviet invasion of Romania in late 1944 and was only resumed in 1949. Two of the ships, renamed ''Democrația'' and ''Descătușarea'', were completed in 1954, with ''Desrobirea'' completed in 1955 and ''Dreptatea'' in 1956. By 1960, the two German naval guns were replaced by Soviet 85 mm naval guns. The four ships were modernized in 1976, being mounted six AA guns of 37 mm and four machine guns of 14.5 mm, as well as mine launching rails, the ships being able to carry up to 50 mines each. __NOTOC__ The Galați shipyard ( ro, Șantierul naval Galați), formally Damen Shipyards Galați, is a shipyard located on the Danube in Galați, a city located in the Moldavia region of Romania. History Origins through communism Shipbuilding is a longstanding practice at Galați: by the late 18th century, longboats, canoes, sailboats and kayaks were being built there for both commercial and military use. Due to Moldavia's being a vassal state, most war vessel production was on behalf of the Ottoman Navy through the 1820s. The wood, of high quality, came from forests upstream and was brought by raft. It was not until the late 1830s, following the establishment of a free port at Galați, that the bulk of its ships started being used domestically: seven vessels were built there in 1839, followed by ten in 1840. A minesweeper is a small warship designed to remove or detonate naval mines. Using various mechanisms intended to counter the threat posed by naval mines, minesweepers keep waterways clear for safe shipping. Romanian Naval Forces
The Romanian Navy ( ro, Forțele Navale Române) is the navy branch of the Romanian Armed Forces; it operates in the Black Sea and on the Danube. It traces its history back to 1860. M-class Minesweeper (Germany)
The M class were the standard minesweeper (german: Minensuchboot) of Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine'' during World War II. The vessels were the primary force in Germany's harbor defense command and were organized administratively into minesweeper flotillas. A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or " rated") warship. The warship class above the corvette is that of the frigate, while the class below was historically that of the sloop-of-war. The modern roles that a corvette fulfills include coastal patrol craft, missile boat and fast attack craft.
