Democratic Workers Congress
The Democratic Workers Congress is a political party and trade union in Sri Lanka. It was founded by Abdul Aziz and was formally registered on 1 January 1956. History The party's origins relate back to the founding of the Ceylon India Congress (CIC) on 25 July 1935, with V. R. M. V. A. Lechumanan Chettiar as its president and Abdul Aziz and H. M. Desai as joint-secretaries. In 1942 Aziz was elected as president of the CIC and Savumiamoorthy Thondaman as its secretary. In 1945 Thondaman defeated Aziz for the presidency of the CIC and in 1948 Aziz regained the presidency. In 1950 the CIC was renamed to the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC). In November 1955 the leadership clashes between Aziz and Thondamon came to a head, with Aziz's election as the president of the CWC and Thondaman's candidate, S. Mano Ganeshan
Akilan Manoharan Ganesan (born 17 December 1959) is a Sri Lankan trade unionist, politician and government minister. He is the leader of the Democratic People's Front (DPF) and Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), members of the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG). Early life Ganesan was born on 17 December 1959. He is a son of V. P. Ganesan, trade unionist and film producer, and brother of Praba Ganesan, former Member of Parliament. Career Ganesan is president of the Democratic Workers Congress trade union. He contested the 1999 provincial council election as one of the Indian Origin People's Front's candidates in Colombo District and was elected to the Western Provincial Council. World Federation Of Trade Unions
The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is an international federation of trade unions established in 1945. Founded in the immediate aftermath of World War Two, the organization built on the pre-war legacy of the International Federation of Trade Unions as a single structure for trade unions world-wide. With the emergence of the Cold War in the late 1940s, the WFTU splintered, with most trade unions from the Western-aligned countries leaving and creating the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in 1949. Throughout the Cold War, membership of the WFTU was made up predominantly of trade unions from the Soviet-aligned and non-aligned countries. Abdul Aziz (Sri Lankan Politician)
Abdul Aziz (6 October 1912 – 5 June 1990) was an Indian-born Ceylonese politician and trade unionist. He was elected to the first Parliament of Ceylon in March 1950 representing the Ceylon Indian Congress as the member for the Maskeliya electorate, at a parliamentary by-election, following the death of the sitting member, G. R. Motha. Aziz was born in India and educated at the Bombay University before moving to Ceylon to join his father. Aziz one of the founding members of the Ceylon Indian Congress (CIC), which was formed on 15 July 1939, with Aziz as one of the joint secretaries, following a visit by Jawaharlal Nehru to Ceylon, In 1942 he was elected as the president of the CIC Labour Union.
