Deirdre Hutton
Dame Deirdre Mary Hutton (born 15 March 1949), is a British public servant, termed by the British media as "Queen of the Quangos" and "The great quango hopper". She was the chair of the UK's Civil Aviation Authority from 2009 to 2020. Early career A former anti-apartheid demonstrator who was once arrested in South Africa, after a short private sector career working for Anchor housing association (1973–75), she then became a researcher for Glasgow Chamber of Commerce (1975–80), before becoming its chair (1980–82). Public appointments Hutton has worked for over 10 major non-departmental public bodies in 30 years. Her first appointment was in 1980 to the Arts Council of Scotland. Quango
A quango or QUANGO (less often QuANGO or QANGO) is an organisation to which a government has devolved power, but which is still partly controlled and/or financed by government bodies. The term was originally a shortening of "quasi-NGO", where NGO is the acronym for a non-government organization. In its pejorative use, it has been widely applied to public bodies of various kinds, and a variety of backronyms have been used to make the term consistent with this expanded use. The most popular have been "Quasi-autonomous national government organization" and "Quasi-autonomous non-government organization", often with the acronym modified to "qango" or "QANGO". As its original name suggests, a quango is a hybrid form of organization, with elements of both NGOs and public sector bodies. Chamber Music
Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends". Alasdair Henry Hutton OBE TD OStJ (born 19 May 1940) is a British writer and narrator for public events and concerts, including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Early life Born in London in 1940, Hutton's house was hit by a bomb three months later, and the family moved to Scotland. Identifying as a Scot, Hutton was educated at Dollar Academy. Following the death of his father, he moved to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia at fourteen years-of-age, with his mother and two siblings. Sir Robert William Roy McNulty, CBE (born 7 November 1937) is a Northern Irish-born businessman. The son of Jack and Nancy McNulty, he was educated at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh and Trinity College Dublin. Geoffrey William Hoon (born 6 December 1953) is a British Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire from 1992 to 2010. He is a former Defence Secretary, Transport Secretary, Leader of the House of Commons and Government Chief Whip. He had previously been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Derbyshire from 1984 to 1994.
