Definitive Collection (Donovan Album)
''Definitive Collection'' is a compilation album from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the Netherlands (Epic 480552 9) and Austria (Sony 480552 9) on 7 November 1995. History Three years after the appearance of '' Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976'', Epic Records (now a Sony subsidiary) issued another two disc compilation titled ''Definitive Collection'' in Europe. The album contained many songs that had not yet appeared on any compact disc. The live recording of "Universal Soldier" was originally released on '' Rising''. A compilation album comprises Album#Tracks, tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several Performing arts#Performers, performers. Rising (Donovan Album)
''Rising'' is the third live album, and twentieth album overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released on Permanent Records in 1990 (LP and CD). The live versions of Donovan's hits guaranteed that ''Rising'' would receive a release in both the United States and United Kingdom. ''Rising'' was retitled ''The Classics Live'' in the United States, ''25 Years in Concert'' in Europe and ''Atlantis'' in the UK for marketing reasons. Since the release of ''Rising'', there have been many reissues of the songs from the album under many different titles. ''Rising'' was supposedly recorded sporadically from 1982 through 1986 at various live concerts during different world tours. However, after careful research the songs on the album came from are revealed as a U.S. tour in 1971 and from the Cambridge Folk Festival of 1981. Donovan Phillips Leitch (born 10 May 1946), known mononymously as Donovan, is a Scottish musician, songwriter, and record producer. He developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelic rock and world music (notably calypso). He has lived in Scotland, Hertfordshire (England), London, California, and—since at least 2008—in County Cork, Ireland, with his family. Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan reached fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with live performances on the pop TV series ''Ready Steady Go!''. Universal Soldier (song)
"Universal Soldier" is a song written and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. The song was originally released on Sainte-Marie's debut album ''It's My Way!'' in 1964. "Universal Soldier" was not an immediate popular hit at the time of its release, but it did garner attention within the contemporary folk music community. It became a hit a year later when Donovan covered it, as did Glen Campbell. Sainte-Marie said of the song: "I wrote 'Universal Soldier' in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all." "Catch the Wind" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. Pye Records released "Catch the Wind" backed with "Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do?" as Donovan's debut release (Pye 7N.15801) in the United Kingdom on 28 February 1965. The single reached No. 4 in the United Kingdom singles chart. Hickory Records released the single in the United States in April 1965 (Hickory 45-1309), where it reached No. 23 in the United States Billboard Hot 100. '' Cash Box'' described it as a "medium-paced, folk-styled low-down bluesey romancer," with a Bob Dylan-like vocal. In May 1965, Pye Records released a different version of "Catch the Wind" on Donovan's debut LP record album What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid (NPL.18117). The "Colours" single was released in the United Kingdom on 28 May 1965 through Pye Records (Pye 7N 15866) and a few months later in the United States through Hickory Records (Hickory 45-1324). "Sunshine Superman" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released as a single in the United States through Epic Records (Epic 5–10045) in July 1966, but due to a contractual dispute the United Kingdom release was delayed until December 1966, where it appeared on Donovan's previous label, Pye Records (Pye 7N 17241). The single was backed with "The Trip" on both the US and UK releases. It has been described as "[one of the] classics of the counterculture of the 1960s, era", and as "the quintessential bright summer sing along". ''Donovan in Concert'' is the sixth album from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan, and the first live album of his career. It was recorded in the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California on 17 November 1967. It was released in the United States in June 1968 ( Epic Records BN 26386 (stereo)) and in the United Kingdom in September 1968 (Pye Records NPL 18237 (monaural) / NSPL 18237 (stereo)). The album reached No.18 on the US charts. History This concert was recorded several months before Donovan released ''A Gift from a Flower to a Garden'', and the concert included several songs that would not have been widely known to a US audience, including some which were UK single b-sides. "Poor Cow" is introduced by Donovan as "Poor Love", its original title, which was changed when the song appeared in the film ''Poor Cow''. ''Wonderful Music of Donovan'' is a compilation album from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released by Remember Records (1993) and in Portugal (WMO 90323) in 1996. History In 1993, budget label Remember Records issued a compilation of Donovan's 1965 Pye Records recordings and selections from his 1984 album '' Lady of the Stars''. Three years later, Portuguese label Wonderful Music of issued exactly the same compilation as ''Wonderful Music of Donovan'' but cut the last two tracks ("Boy for Every Girl" and "Till I See You Again").
