Defence Assistance Organisation
The Defence Assistance Organisation ( bg, Организация за съдействие на отбраната, ОСО), initially the Voluntary Defence Assistance Organisation ( bg, Доброволна организация за съдействие на отбраната, ДОСО) was a government-sponsored network of youth clubs in the People's Republic of Bulgaria. It was created in 1947 as the ''People's Union of Sports and Technics'', a government-sponsored body where Bulgarian youth could voluntarily engage in activities that were in some form related to the Bulgarian People's Army. The ''People's Union'' was reformed into the Voluntary Defence Assistance Organisation in 1951. The Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP; bg, Българска Комунистическа Партия (БКП), Balgarska komunisticheska partiya (BKP)) was the founding and ruling party of the People's Republic of Bulgaria from 1946 until 1989, when the country ceased to be a socialist state. The party had dominated the Fatherland Front, a coalition that took power in 1944, late in World War II, after it led a coup against Bulgaria's tsarist regime in conjunction with the Red Army's crossing the border. It controlled its armed forces, the Bulgarian People's Army. The Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik (GST), lit. “Sport and Technology Association”, was one of the East German “Mass Organizations”. Officially, it was established to structure the free time of young people interested in sports and technology in group activities, provide the required technical equipment (for example, motorcycles, aircraft, radios), cultivate and support technical sport disciplines, and arrange for events like motor and shooting competitions. Dimitrovist Pioneer Organization "Septemberists" ( bg, Димитровска пионерска организация "Септемврийче") was a pioneer movement in Bulgaria. The organization was founded in September 1944. DPO "Septemberists" organized children between 9 and 14 years old. Its day-to-day affairs were supervised by the Dimitrov Communist Youth Union. A 1967 estimate put its membership to about 700 000. There were also an organization called ''chavdarcheta'' – these were the youngest children, which later became pioneers. The difference between the two was the distinctive scarf, which was sky-blue in the chavdarcheta movement and red in the pioneri movement.
