Deering Oaks
Deering Oaks is a public park in Portland, Maine, which has a baseball diamond, tennis courts, a playground, and a pond. It is located west of downtown Portland and is bordered by Deering Avenue on the west, Forest Avenue on the east, Park Avenue to the south and Interstate 295 to the north. State Street bisects the park. Access is from State Street, Deering Avenue, or Park Avenue. The Portland Farmers Market is located on the Park Avenue side of the park. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History During King William's War, Benjamin Church helped defend the British settlers on this site in September 1689 against Canadiens, and tribes of the Wabanaki Confederacy. The city had for some time been interested in the Deering Oaks property, part of a larger estate owned by the Deering family since the early 19th century. Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson
Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson (January 29, 1871 – October 29, 1932), also known as Tho. A. R. Kitson and Theo Alice Ruggles, was an American sculptor. Life Kitson was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Cyrus W. and Anna H. Ruggles. As a young child she displayed artistic talent, but when her mother attempted to enroll her in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she was informed that she was too young to be admitted. Her mother then approached other schools, which gave her the same advice. One of the school directors, however, suggested that she find a tutor for her and pointed her in the direction of a rising star, Henry Hudson Kitson. She began studying with sculptor Henry Hudson Kitson in 1886, and married him in Boston in 1893 in the social event of the season. Portland Daily Sun
''The Portland Daily Sun'' was a free newspaper that was distributed to retail and business locations in Portland, Maine between 2009 and 2014. The paper was founded in 2009 by Mark Guerringue and Adam Hirshan of Country News Club, in partnership with Curtis Robinson, who served as founding editor. Its first edition was printed February 3, 2009. Circulation, which started at 3,000 copies, quickly rose to 15,000. It published five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. In 2012, the newspaper moved its offices to the Time and Temperature Building in downtown Portland. At the time, publisher Mark Guerringue said ''The Portland Daily Sun'' was not yet profitable, but "We're poised for it, the pieces are in place". In 2013, the newspaper decreased its publication days from five to only two per week (Tuesdays and Fridays), citing a lack of advertisers.
