The Deer Lodge Central Business Historic District, in Deer Lodge, Montana, in Powell County, Montana, is a historic district (United States), historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The district includes three blocks on both sides of Deer Lodge's Main Street between Cottonwood Ave. to the north and Montana Ave. to the south, and the closer sides of two blocks of 2nd St. and 4th St. (Main St. is effectively 3rd St.) This includes 61 main buildings, of which 46 are contributing buildings, and three auxiliary buildings. It includes the Rialto Theater (Deer Lodge, Montana), Rialto Theater (1921), at 418 Main Street, which was separately listed on the National Register in 1998. The district includes early Western Commercial, Late Victorian, Classical Revival, and Romanesque Revival architecture. Deer Lodge is a city in and the county seat of Powell County, Montana, Powell County, Montana, United States. The population was 2,938 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. Description The city is perhaps best known as the home of the Montana State Prison, a major local employer. The Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs, Montana, Warm Springs, and former state tuberculosis sanitarium in nearby Galen, Montana, Galen are the result of the power the western part of the state held over Montana at statehood due to the copper and mineral wealth in that area. Mesker Brothers
The Mesker Brothers Iron Works and George L. Mesker & Co. were competing manufacturers and designers of ornamental sheet-metal facades and cast iron storefront components from the 1880s through the mid-twentieth century. The Mesker Brothers Iron Works was based in St. Louis, Missouri, and was operated by brothers Bernard and Frank Mesker. The George L. Mesker Company was operated by a third brother, George L. Mesker, and was based in Evansville, Indiana. The Mesker brothers were the sons of John Mesker who operated a stove business in Evansville and later galvanized iron for buildings. The three brothers learned their iron-working skills from their father. The companies' products are often referred to as "Meskers." Beezer Brothers
The Beezer Brothers were American architects active from the late 19th-century to the great depression. They were twins, who practiced together in western Pennsylvania before moving to Seattle, Washington in 1907 to participate in the city's rapid growth brought on by the Klondike Gold Rush. They designed homes and municipal buildings, but are best known for the many Catholic churches they designed. Their work on the west coast, while concentrated in Seattle, can be found from Los Angeles to San Francisco to Alaska, and inland to Montana. Western false front architecture or false front commercial architecture is a type of commercial architecture used in the Old West of the United States. Often used on two-story buildings, the style includes a vertical facade with a square top, often hiding a gable roof. The goal for the architecture is to project an image of stability and success, while in fact a business owner may not have invested much in a building that might be temporary. Rialto Theater (Deer Lodge, Montana)
The Rialto Theater in Deer Lodge, Montana was built in 1921 with 720 seats. The Beaux Arts style theater featured extensive painted murals, artistic plaster designs, and a painted stage backgrounds. The distinctive exterior used white terra cotta and red roof tiles. The theatre was purchased in 1995 for $60,000 by a non-profit community organization that then began restoring and operating the theatre. The Rialto was gutted by a fire on November 4, 2006, that destroyed the stage, auditorium and balcony. Rebuilding costs were originally estimated in the 6 to 8 million dollar range. The Deer Lodge community immediately began undertaking the endeavor, and the theatre was officially reopened in May 2012. The rebuild was long and sustained and focused on historical reproduction, affordability, and practicality.
