Ada Deer
Ada Deer (born 1935) is a member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and a Native American advocate, scholar and civil servant. As an activist she opposed the federal termination of tribes from the 1950s following the bills led by Arthur Vivian Watkins, a Republican senator. During the Clinton Administration, Deer served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs. Background Deer was born in Keshena, Wisconsin in 1935 and grew up living on an Indian reservation. Deer was an active member of the Menominee tribe, which is located in the northeast side of Wisconsin. She studied and obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Master of Social Work from the New York School of Social Work (later Columbia University School of Social Work). George Deer
George Deer, OBE (29 March 1890 – 15 May 1974) was a British Trade union official and politician. Early career Deer went to an elementary school in Grimsby. He began work at the age of 12 and worked on the railways, at the docks and in engineering shops; he was also a commercial traveller. In 1915, he became a full-time organiser for the Workers' Union, covering a new East Midlands district, serving until 1918, when he became an official for the National Union of Dock, Riverside and General Workers. Following its merger, he transferred into the Transport and General Workers' Union. At the age of 17, Deer had joined the Independent Labour Party and he was active in the Labour Party. His wife, Olive Stoakes was also active in the party and was an Alderman and member of the London County Council. James Young Deer (April 1, 1876 – April 6, 1946), also known as J. Younger Johnson or Jim Young Deer, was actually born James Young Johnson in Washington, D.C. Although he was identified in the early Hollywood trade paper Moving Picture World as of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, his ancestry is of the Nanticoke people of Delaware. He became an early film actor, director, writer, and producer. He is believed to be the first Native American filmmaker/producer in Hollywood. Together with his wife and partner Lillian St. Cyr, Winnebago, the couple were labeled an "influential force" in the production of one-reel Westerns during the first part of the silent film era. Robert George Deer (born September 29, 1960) is an American former professional baseball outfielder. Early life Deer attended Canyon High School in Anaheim and Fresno City College. During his tenure with the Milwaukee Brewers, he worked for his father's construction firm.
