Dee Margo
Donald "Dee" Margo (born February 4, 1952) is an American businessman and politician who served as the 51st mayor of El Paso, Texas from 2017 to 2021. Early life and education Margo graduated from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Alabama. He accepted a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University and graduated in 1974 with a degree in history and economics. Career Margo moved to El Paso in 1977 from Nashville, Tennessee to join his father-in-law's insurance business, John D. Williams Company. In February 1981, six days after Margo’s 29th birthday, his father-in-law suffered a fatal heart attack. Margo purchased JDW from the estate and expanded the company from 6 employees to 70. In 2005, Margo was named chairman of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce and in 2012 sold his company to HUB International. From 2011 to 2013, Margo served in the Texas House of Representatives. El Paso County is the westernmost county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 865,657, making it the ninth-most populous county in the state of Texas. Its seat is the city of El Paso, the sixth-most populous city in Texas and the 22nd-most populous city in the United States. The county was created in 1850 and later organized in 1871. ''El Paso'' is short for "El Paso del Norte", which is Spanish for "The Pass of the North". It is named for the pass the Rio Grande creates through the mountains on either side of the river. Incumbent Mayor Oscar Leeser was eligible for another term, but announced in July 2016 he would not seek another term. Leeser had a cancer-related surgery in 2016, but stated that his decision was not because of his health. Instead, it was because he "ran to do things I thought were really important for our community and I did that." The election was non-partisan; therefore there was no primary election. However, if no candidate won a majority there will be a run-off election. The mayor and council members elected in 2017 will serve through December 2020. The term is shortened because of a charter amendment to move city elections from May in odd-numbered years to November in even-numbered years. Joe Moody (Texas)
Joseph Edward Moody (born January 9, 1981) is a lawyer from El Paso, Texas, who was Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House of Representatives. He has represented District 78, based entirely in El Paso County, since 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Moody previously represented District 78 for the single term from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he unseated the Republican Dee Margo, Mayor of El Paso from 2017 to 2021. Moody defeated Margo in the general elections of both 2008 and 2012, but Margo prevailed in the 2010 contest, with lowered turnout in a mid-term election. Moody won his fifth nonconsecutive term in the House in the general election held on November 6, 2018.
