The Dedham Fire Department is the fire department for Dedham, Massachusetts. History Early history A vote of Town Meeting to purchase a bell for the meetinghouse was made in 1648, but a bell was not hung until February 1652. The bell was rung not only to alert residents of a fire, but also to announce the start of public meetings, to announce a death, and to signal the start of church services. In the 1600s, each resident was cautioned to keep a ladder handy in case he may need to put out a fire on his thatched roof or climb out of harm's way should there be an attack from the Indians. It was also decreed that if any man should tie his horse to the ladder against the meetinghouse then he would be fined sixpence. In 1796, a new company was charted by the General Court granting Calvin Whiting the right to deliver water from Federal Hill to houses in the High Street and Franklin Square areas using hollowed out pine logs. Ames Schoolhouse
The Ames Schoolhouse is a historic school building at 450 Washington Street in Dedham, Massachusetts. It was originally part of the Dedham Public Schools. It currently serves as the town hall and senior center for the Town of Dedham. The Colonial Revival structure was built in 1897. It was named in honor of American Revolution-era politician Fisher Ames. It is a large H-shaped building, with a central section flanked by symmetrical projecting bays on either side. It has a hip roof with a deep dentillated eave, and pilastered corners. The main entrance is set under broad arch at the center, with a Palladian window above. The Dedham Museum and Archive (formerly known as the Dedham Historical Society and Museum and the Dedham Historical Society), is an historical society dedicated to preserve and establish a greater sense of appreciation for the history of Dedham, Massachusetts. Augustus Bradford Endicott
Augustus Bradford Endicott (September 10, 1818 – November 21, 1910) was a Massachusetts state legislator and sheriff of Norfolk County. Biography Endicott, the son of Elijah Endicott and Cynthia (Childs) Endicott, was born September 10, 1818, in Canton, Massachusetts. He was a direct descendant of Gilbert Endicott, who arrived in Massachusetts from England in 1658. Following an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Endicott moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts at age 21 where he was employed for ten years as a pattern maker in a foundry. In 1853, Endicott moved to Dedham, Massachusetts, and was appointed deputy sheriff of Norfolk County for Dedham the same year. He served in that position until 1885. In 1885, he was elected sheriff of Norfolk County, a position in which he served for ten years. Endicott represented Dedham in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1872 and 1874. The history of rail in Dedham, Massachusetts begins with the introduction of the first rail line in 1836 and runs to the present day. Multiple railroads have serviced Dedham since then, and current service is provided by the MBTA. Henry Bradford Endicott
Henry Bradford Endicott (September 11, 1853 – February 12, 1920) was the founder of the Endicott Johnson Corporation as well as the builder of the Endicott Estate, in Dedham, Massachusetts. During World War I he served in numerous public capacities, including as a labor strike negotiator and as director of the Massachusetts Committee on Public Safety. He was born in Dedham, and died of spinal meningitis at the Brooks Hospital in Brookline. Endicott Estate
The Endicott Estate is a mansion built in the early twentieth century, located at 656 East Street in Dedham, Massachusetts “situated on a 15-acre panorama of lush green lawn that is punctuated by stately elm, spruce and weeping willow trees.” It was built by Henry Bradford Endicott, founder of the Endicott Johnson Corporation, and donated to the Town by his adopted stepdaughter, Katherine Endicott, Katherine. After she died it was briefly owned by the state and intended to be used as the official residence of the governor, but was quickly returned to the Town. The history of Dedham, Massachusetts in the 20th century saw great growth come to the town. It played host to the Sacco and Vanzetti trial, saw the Endicott Estate and a number of schools constructed, a great deal of economic development, and growth in the number of services provided by the Town. Government A bill establishing a representative town meeting was established in 1928, and then amended in 1948. It was almost amended again when a resident used a friendly representative in a neighboring community to introduce and pass a bill in the General Court. A Charter was adopted later in the century, and amended again in the 21st century. The Department of Public Works was created in 1933. Fire Department The first fire chief was appointed in 1920.
