Dedemsvaart
Dedemsvaart ("Dedem's Canal") (Dutch Low Saxon: ''De Voart'') is a town in Overijssel, the Netherlands. Overview The town is located along an old canal, also called , which is the source of the village's name. The canal lost its commercial importance after World War II. The area around Dedemsvaart, until 2001 part of the municipality of Avereest, was an important centre for industry. Willem Jan van Dedem, after whom the canal and town were named, made a plan to dig a canal; construction began on 9 July 1810. Around two years later, in 1811, the canal had already reached Balkbrug, and the town was established. In 1845 the project got into financial trouble and the baron had to forfeit the canal of Dedemsvaart, until then a private possession, to the province of Overijssel, who took further care of the canal. Willem Jan Van Dedem
Willem Jan, Baron van Dedem tot de Rollecate (18 March 1776 – 21 November 1851) was a Dutch lawyer, landowner and taxation officer who was responsible for the peat excavation in south-east Drenthe and north-east Overijssel. The and town of Dedemsvaart are named after van Dedem. Biography Van Dedem was born on 18 March 1776 in Zwolle as a member of the family. He studied law, and began his career as a lawyer in Zwolle. Gerrit Willem van Marle, his father-in-law, had developed a plan in 1791 to excavate the peat in south-east Drenthe and north-east Overijssel by digging a canal from Hasselt to Gramsbergen. In 1809, van Dedem received permission from King Louis Bonaparte to dig the canal which became known as (Dedem's canal). Hardenberg
Hardenberg (; nds-nl, Haddenbarreg or '' 'n Arnbarg'') is a city and municipality in the province of Overijssel, Eastern Netherlands. The municipality of Hardenberg has a population of about 60,000, with about 19,000 living in the city. It received city rights in 1362 from Jan van Arkel, Bishop of Utrecht. The famous Pieterpad passes through Hardenberg, a municipality which is located on the German border. Transport Cycling There are many cycling routes throughout Hardenberg. Mien Ruys
Wilhelmina Jacoba Moussault-Ruys (14 February 1904 – 9 January 1999), was a Dutch landscape and garden architect. Her gardening legacy is maintained in the Dutch town of Dedemsvaart, which is home to the ''Tuinen Mien Ruys''. With people such as Piet Oudolf, she is considered a leader in the "New Perennial Movement." Career Mien Ruys briefly studied garden architecture in Berlin in the 1920s, and spent time in England as well (Tunbridge Wells); her father was a friend of Gertrude Jekyll, from whom Ruys is supposed to have learned some things about colour. During World War II she studied engineering in Delft, but then returned home to work and experiment at her father's company. Ruys's father, Bonne Ruys, founded the Moerheim Nursery in 1888 specializing in perennials in the bogs near Dedemsvaart, near Zwolle, in the east of the Netherlands. Martin Koster
Martin Gert Koster (Dedemsvaart, Netherlands, 1950) is a Dutch writer in the Drèents variety of Dutch Low Saxon. Known for his parodies and sarcasm, he is one of the founders of Drèents literary magazine '' Roet'', which sought to broaden the literary appeal of Drèents writing by teasing it away from a focus on nostalgia and trodden paths. In 2021 Koster received a knighthood in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his efforts on behalf of the Drèents language. Youth and employment as teacher Koster's family on his father's side had lived between the river Reest and the Dedemsvaart canal since the 19th century. His mother's family left the Kingdom of Hannover in the 19th century as asylum seekers, establishing themselves in Roswinkel in the province of Drenthe. Anna Charlotte Ruys
Anna Charlotte Ruys or Charlotte Defresne-Ruys (1898 – 1977) was a Dutch professor of bacteriology and epidemiology. She became a proponent of hygiene in public health and an activist against biological warfare. Early life and education Ruys was born in Dedemsvaart as a daughter of Bonne Ruys and Engelina Gijsberta Fledderus. Her younger sister, Mien, became a landscape architect and carried on their father's work. Ruys studied at the Gymnasium in Zwolle and then was awarded a bachelor's degree in Utrecht. She pursued a PhD in medicine at Groningen, graduating on 3 July 1925 after submitting a thesis on the cause of rat-bite fever. Career She was hired by plague specialist Professor J. Balkbrug
Balkbrug is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality Hardenberg, about 5 km west of Dedemsvaart. History Balkbrug is located where the road from Ommen splits into a road to Meppel and Leeuwarden, and a road to Hoogeveen and the city of Groningen. In 1599, a redoubt was constructed in Ommerschans, south of Balkbrug. The village appeared in 1811 along the as part of a peat colony. It is named after a simple type of bridge. In 1819, a beggar's colony was founded to the south of the village. In 1840, it was home to 1,308 people. The church was built in 1896. In 1893/94, the beggar's colony was turned into the state educational institution Veldzicht, a prison for young offenders. In 1911, it was enlarged and became the largest of the Netherlands. Lutten
Lutten (Dutch Low Saxon: ''Luttn'') is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality Hardenberg, about south-west of Coevorden. History The village was first mentioned in 1532 as Lotten, and means "low lying place". There was another hamlet called Lutten nearby which changed its name to (Old Lutten). Lutten developed during the peat excavation of the raised bog. The construction of the canal stagnated near Lutten around 1830, because the ' Ane had not divided up the wilderness in its area. A ''marke'' was a form of government with communal land. In 1832, the problem was solved by digging a canal to Slagharen. Lutten was home to 236 people in 1840. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with an entrance hall topped by a tower with wooden roof lantern. It was built in 1853. Jannie Visscher (born 8 November 1961) is a Dutch politician for the Socialist Party (SP). From 2006 to 2014 she was alderman of Groningen. From 2014 to 2018 she was alderman in Eindhoven. Roos-Anne (Sanne) Hans (born 22 September 1984 in Dedemsvaart), is a Dutch singer-songwriter and guitar player. She was part of Ysis until 2008 and later formed the band Miss Montreal. Ysis Sanne Hans first was part of the formation Ysis made up of her on vocals and guitar, Inge van Calkar also on guitar and vocals and Ilse Gerritsen on the cello. They all stutter, which didn't impact on their singing. Miss Montreal October 2008 she started as the lead singer of a new band Miss Montreal, together with Kobus Groen (bass, backing vocals), Michi Schwiemann (guitar), Thijs Rensink (drums) and Peter Hendriks (keyboards).
