Dedalus Press
Dedalus Press is one of the major publishers of contemporary poetry in Ireland (with more than 150 titles currently in print). History Founded in 1985 by poet and fiction writer John F. Deane, it is now run by poet and editor Pat Boran and manager Raffaela Tranchino. At present the press publishes approximately 8 new book-length publications each year, concentrating on contemporary poetry from Ireland but also regularly issuing anthologies and individual volumes by European writers in translation (often in bilingual formats). Dedalus also represents Thomas Kinsella's Peppercanister series of pamphlets, Iggy McGovern's occasional Quaternion Press and Pat Boran's own imprint, Orange Crate Books. According to MEAS report providing statistics for Irish poetry publications, Dedalus Press in 2018 was the joint-fourth most prolific poetry press on the Island of Ireland. Pat Boran
Pat Boran (born 1963) is an Irish poet. Biography Born in Portlaoise, Boran has lived in Dublin for a number of years. He is the publisher of the Dedalus Press which specialises in contemporary poetry from Ireland, and international poetry in English-language translation, and was until 2007 Programme Director of the annual Dublin Writers Festival. Currently he is the presenter of "The Poetry Programme", a weekly half-hour poetry programme on RTÉ Radio 1, where he has interviewed poets such as Tess Gallagher, Tony Curtis, John Haynes, Gerry Murphy and Jane Hirshfield. His poetry publications include ''The Unwound Clock'' (1990), ''History and Promise'' (1991), ''Familiar Things'' (1993), ''The Shape of Water'' (1996), ''As the Hand, the Glove'' (2001) and ''The Next Life'' (2012). Paula Meehan
Paula Meehan (born 1955) is an Irish poet and playwright. Life and work Paula Meehan was born in Dublin in 1955, the eldest of six children. She subsequently moved to London with her parents where she attended St. Elizabeth's Primary School in Kingston upon Thames. She then returned to Dublin with her family where she attended a number of primary schools finishing her primary education at the Central Model Girls' School in Gardiner Street. She began her secondary education at St. Michael's Holy Faith Covent in Finglas but was expelled for organising a protest march against the regime of the school. She studied for her Intermediate Certificate on her own and then went to Whitehall House Senior College, a vocational school, to study for her Leaving Certificate. Macdara Woods
Macdara Woods (1942 – 15 June 2018) was an Irish poet. Biography Woods was born in Dublin, where he attended Gonzaga College and then University College Dublin. He married the poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin. They had one son, Niall, a musician. He lived in Dublin and Umbria. Woods was a founder-editor of the Irish literary magazine ''Cyphers''. He died on 15 June 2018 in St. James's Hospital, aged 76. Francis Harvey
Major Francis John William Harvey, VC (29 April 1873 – 31 May 1916) was an officer of the British Royal Marine Light Infantry during the First World War. Harvey was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military award for gallantry in the face of the enemy given to British and Commonwealth forces, for his actions at the height of the Battle of Jutland. A long-serving Royal Marine officer descended of a military family, during his career Harvey became a specialist in naval artillery, serving on many large warships as gunnery training officer and gun commander. Specially requested for , the flagship of the British battlecruiser fleet, Harvey fought at the battles of Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank and Jutland. Theo Dorgan
Theo Dorgan (born 1953) is an Irish poet, writer and lecturer, translator, librettist and documentary screenwriter. He lives in Dublin. Life Dorgan was born in Cork in 1953 being second child born into a family of 8 boys and 8 girls to parents Bertie and Rosemary Dorgan, and was educated in North Monastery School. He completed a BA in English and Philosophy and a MA in English at University College Cork, after which he tutored and lectured in that University, while simultaneously Literature Officer with Triskel Arts Centre in Cork. He was visiting faculty at University of Southern Maine. He lives in Dublin with his partner, the poet and playwright Paula Meehan. Doireann Ní Ghríofa
Doireann Ní Ghríofa is an Irish poet and essayist who writes in both Irish and English. Biography Doireann Ní Ghríofa was born in Galway in 1981, but grew up in County Clare. She now lives in County Cork. Ní Ghríofa has been published widely in literary magazines in Ireland and abroad, such as ''Poetry'', ''The Irish Times'', '' Irish Examiner'', ''Prairie Schooner'', and ''The Stinging Fly''. Gerry Murphy (poet)
Gerry Murphy is an Irish poet. Life and work Gerry Murphy was born in Cork City in 1952. His work is witty, openly intellectual and often satirical and is "highly, self-consciously literary". "Much of the most recent work displays intense absorption of the Roman classics either through direct reference or employment of the pithy epigram." He attended University College Cork where he was part of a resurgence of literary activity under the inspiration of John Montague. Eva Bourke
Eva Bourke (born 1946) is a German-born Irish poet. Biography Bourke was born in Germany but has lived for much of her life in Galway, Ireland. She studied German Literature and History of Art at the University of Munich. Towards the end of the seventies she moved with her husband Eoin Bourke and her three children to Galway in the West of Ireland, where Eoin held the position of professor of German Literature at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She has lived in Galway since, where she also has taught at the university for many years. Since the nineties she and her husband have divided their time between Ireland and Berlin. Her daughter Miriam de Burca is an artist and film maker and one of her sons is Benjamin de Burca, member of the artist duo Wagner/de Burca. Ciaran O'Driscoll
Ciaran O'Driscoll (born 1943) is an Irish poet and novelist born in Callan, County Kilkenny and living in Limerick. Biography Ciaran O’Driscoll lives in Limerick. He worked as a lecturer for the School of Art and Design at the Limerick Institute of Technology before he retired. A member of Aosdána, he has published nine books of poetry, including Gog and Magog (1987), Moving On, Still There (2001), and Surreal Man (2006). His fourth collection, The Old Women of Magione, was translated into Italian in 2006, and a Selected Poems in Slovene translation was published in 2013.
