Declan Murphy (jockey)
Declan Murphy (born 5 March 1966) is an Irish former horse rider known for his return to his career after a life-threatening injury. Biography Murphy was raised in County Limerick and went on to study law at the University of California. His first win under Rules was on Prom at Tralee in 1983. Barney Curley brought him to England where he would become Josh Gifford's stable jockey. Through this partnership, Murphy rode Deep Sensation to win the 1993 Queen Mother Champion Chase and Bradbury Star to the 1993 Mackeson Gold Cup. He would also ride winners at the Bula Hurdle and the Tripleprint Gold Cup. He suffered a near fatal fall while riding Arcot at the 1994 Swinton Handicap Hurdle. Barney Curley
Bernard Joseph Curley (5 October 1939 – 23 May 2021) was a racehorse trainer, gambler and founder of the Zambian charity DAFA from Northern Ireland Biography Bernard Joseph (Barney) Curley was born one of six children to Kathleen and Charlie Curley. He attended Mungret College with the intent of becoming a Jesuit priest, but several years into his training contracted TB and was hospitalised for nine months. He then owned a bookmaker's shop in Belfast (which went bust) and a pub before going into music management, serving as manager of the act Frankie McBride and the Polka Dots who had a hit on the British singles chart with the song ''Five Little Fingers''.? However he decided on a career in thoroughbred horse racing. As a trainer he had stables in County Westmeath and later in the Newmarket area between 1985 and 2012. Josh Gifford
Josh Gifford (3 August 1941 – 9 February 2012) was a jockey and trainer in National Hunt racing. He was a four-time Champion Jockey, riding 642 winners in his career. He retired from training in 2002, aged 60, and his son Nick Gifford took over training duties. Josh's daughter Kristina Cook (née Gifford) is an Olympic medal winning rider who competes in the horse trials sport of eventing. Biography Gifford was born in Huntingdon. At the age of 28, he turned to training racehorses, with Frank Pullen being his first owner, and later trained Aldaniti, the winner of the 1981 Grand National. He was played by Edward Woodward in the 1983 film ''Champions''. His training stables, which he took over from his former boss, Captain H. Ryan Price, were located in Findon, West Sussex. Deep Sensation
Deep Sensation (6 July 1985 – 25 November 2003) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who competed under National Hunt rules. He ran in six consecutive Cheltenham Festivals and is best known for his win in the 1993 Queen Mother Champion Chase. In his first three seasons he was campaigned in hurdle races, recording his most notable success in the 1990 Tote Gold Trophy. When switched to larger obstacles he was one of the leading novice steeplechasers of 1991/1992, winning the Lightning Novices' Chase and the Nottinghamshire Novices' Chase. He reached his peak in the following season, when he took the H & T Walker Gold Cup, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Melling Chase. He never won another major race but recorded two minor wins and was placed in several important chases over the next two years.
