Deckeniidae
Potamonautidae is a family of freshwater crabs endemic to Africa, including the islands of Madagascar, the Seychelles, Zanzibar, Mafia, Pemba, Bioko, São Tomé, Príncipe and Sherbro Island. It comprises 18 extant genera and 138 extant species. Fossil remains dating from the Late Miocene period have been attributed to the family Potamonautidae. It comprises the following subfamilies and genera: ; Deckeniinae Ortmann, 1897 *'' Deckenia'' Hilgendorf, 1869 *'' Seychellum'' Ng, Števčić & Pretzmann, 1995 ; Hydrothelphusinae Bott, 1955 *'' Afrithelphusa'' Bott, 1969 *'' Boreas'' Cumberlidge & von Sternberg, 2002 *'' Globonautes'' Bott, 1959 *'' Hydrothelphusa'' A. Seychellum
''Seychellum alluaudi'' is a species of freshwater crab endemic to the Seychelles, and the only true freshwater crab in that country. It lives in rainforest streams on the archipelago's granitic high islands. Although it may be abundant, little is known about its biology. If its habitat were to decline in quality, ''S. alluaudi'' might become endangered, but it is currently listed as '' Vulnerable'' on the IUCN Red List. ''S. alluaudi'' was described as a species of '' Deckenia'' in 1893 and 1894, and later split off into the monotypic segregate genus ''Seychellum''. Its closest relatives are the two species currently in ''Deckenia'', both of which are found in East Africa. Several hypotheses have been published to explain how ''Seychellum'' reached its isolated location, including submerged "land bridges" and ancient vicariance, although some means of transport across the open ocean is considered the most likely explanation. Adults are dark yellow to brown in colour, a ...

Deckenia (crab)
''Deckenia'' is a genus of freshwater crabs from East Africa, in the family Potamonautidae, or sometimes in a family of its own, Deckeniidae. The genus was named by Hilgendorf after Karl Klaus von der Decken who collected the first examples during his expeditions to Africa. Both species live in swamps from Eyl in Somalia to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, both in coastal areas and further inland. A third species, ''Deckenia alluaudi'', lives in the Seychelles, and has been transferred to a separate genus, ''Seychellum''. ''Deckenia imitatrix'' ''Deckenia imitatrix'' is found in the coastal plains between Kenya and Somalia. It is threatened by habitat loss, and is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. ''Deckenia mitis'' ''Deckenia mitis'' is found in a few places in Kenya, and more widely in Tanzania from the eastern coastal lowlands to the western Wembere Steppe, and south to near Lake Malawi. It is threatened by habitat loss, and is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red ...

Afrithelphusa
''Afrithelphusa'' is a genus of freshwater crabs in the family Deckeniidae. It contains four species, all of which were formerly listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They are all endemic to the Upper Guinean forests of Guinea and Sierra Leone. ''Afrithelphusa afzelii'' ''Afrithelphusa afzelii'' (Colosi, 1924) is known from two specimens collected before 1800 from a single, unknown locality in Sierra Leone. It is considered IUCN Red List, possibly extinct. ''Afrithelphusa gerhildae'' ''Afrithelphusa gerhildae'' (Bott, 1969) is known from three specimens collected in 1957 in Kindia, Guinea. Although population sizes are not known, the expansion of slash and burn agriculture and deforestation are likely to have caused it to decline. The lack of information about this species has led to its reappraisal as Data Deficient. ''Afrithelphusa leonensis'' ''Afrithelphusa leonensis'' (Cumberlidge, 1987) is known from three specimens ...

Freshwater Crab
Around 1,300 species of freshwater crabs are distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics, divided among eight families. They show direct development and maternal care of a small number of offspring, in contrast to marine crabs, which release thousands of planktonic larvae. This limits the dispersal abilities of freshwater crabs, so they tend to be endemic to small areas. As a result, a large proportion are threatened with extinction. Systematics More than 1,300 described species of freshwater crabs are known, out of a total of 6,700 species of crabs across all environments. The total number of species of freshwater crabs, including undescribed species, is thought to be up to 65% higher, potentially up to 2,155 species, although most of the additional species are currently unknown to science. They belong to eight families, each with a limited distribution, although various crabs from other families are also able to tolerate freshwater conditions ( euryhaline) or are secon ...

Family (biology)
Family ( la, familia, plural ') is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as the "walnut family". What belongs to a family—or if a described family should be recognized at all—are proposed and determined by practicing taxonomists. There are no hard rules for describing or recognizing a family, but in plants, they can be characterized on the basis of both vegetative and reproductive features of plant species. Taxonomists often take different positions about descriptions, and there may be no broad consensus across the scientific community for some time. The publishing of new data and opini ...

Louisea
''Louisea'' is a genus of freshwater crab in the family Potamonautidae, containing two species, ''Louisea balssi'' and ''Louisea edeaensis''. Both species are endemic to Cameroon and listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List. ''L. edeaensis'' is known from only three specimens, which were collected in 1910 from two locations in Edéa and Yabassi, while ''L. balssi'' is only known from four specimens collected in the Bamenda highlands The Western High Plateau, Western Highlands or Bamenda Grassfields is a region of Cameroon characterised by high relief, cool temperatures, heavy rainfall and savanna vegetation. ''Globonautes macropus'' is a species of crab in the family Potamonautidae, the only species in the genus ''Globonautes''. It is found in Guinea and Liberia and presumably in Sierra Leone, and is listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. It lives in tree hollows filled with water, in closed-canopy rainforest Rainforests are characterized by a closed and continuous tree canopy, moisture-dependent vegetation, the presence of epiphytes and lianas and the absence of wildfire.
