Debra Dawes
Debra Dawes (born 1955) is an Australian contemporary painter best known for her abstract paintings of gridlike structures and geometric patterns. She has been a practicing artist since the early 1980s and is seen as one of the leading figures in Australian abstract art. She has held over 25 solo exhibitions, been part of more than 60 group exhibitions and her works are held in national, state and private collections around Australia. Biography Debra Dawes was born in Goondiwindi, Queensland, Australia on 9 May 1955. She currently travels between Coledale, Murrurundi and Sydney, NSW to live and work. Dawes met her now husband, Jelle van den Berg, in 1982. She traveled with him to The Netherlands and stayed there for 6 months before returning to Australia to continue her studies. New England Regional Art Museum The New England Regional Art Museum, known as NERAM, is a museum of Australian art located in Armidale in the New England region of New South Wales. Cruthers Collection Of Women's Art
Cruthers Collection of Women's Art is a collection of more than 700 artworks by Australian women, held at the University of Western Australia. It is the only public collection focused on women's art in Australia. The Cruthers Collection was founded in 2007 following the donation by Sir James and Lady Sheila Cruthers of some 400 artworks and is named in recognition of their gift. The collection includes artworks by Australian women artists from the 1890s to the present day, with Australian modernism, feminist and contemporary art being represented. There is a focus on "the artist and her work", where a portrait or self-portrait of an artist is supported by a non-portrait example of their work. Artbank
Artbank is an art rental program established in 1980 by the Australian Government. It supports contemporary Australian artists and encourages a wider appreciation of their work by buying artworks which it then rents to public and private sector clients. History Artbank was modelled on Canada's Art Bank, after then federal minister for the arts, Bob Ellicott, saw the Ottawa collection in 1979 and convinced Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser of the value of the idea. Fraser was enthusiastic, but treasurer John Howard took a little more convincing, before allotting in seed funding. The collection was founded in 1980 with an endowment of 600 artworks from the National Gallery of Australia. By 1992 Artbank had become so profitable that its government funding was cut off and it operated on self-generated income.
