Debi Austin
Debi Austin (April 13, 1950 – February 22, 2013) was a pioneering Tobacco control movement, anti-smoking advocate, appearing in anti-tobacco ads that aired in California starting in 1996. Early life and education Born Deborah Austin on April 13, 1950 in Illinois, she moved to Los Angeles in 1954. She began smoking while attending junior high school in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, Canoga Park. Her first cigarette was an unfiltered Camel (cigarette), Camel that she had stolen from her father. By high school she was smoking one pack of Camels per day. By the time she went to University of California, Berkeley, UC Berkeley and managed a small, private phone company, she was smoking more than one pack a day. Laryngectomy
Laryngectomy is the removal of the larynx and separation of the airway from the mouth, nose and esophagus. In a total laryngectomy, the entire larynx is removed (including the vocal folds, hyoid bone, epiglottis, Thyroid cartilage, thyroid and cricoid cartilage and a few Trachea, tracheal cartilage rings). In a partial laryngectomy, only a portion of the larynx is removed. Following the procedure, the person breathes through an opening in the neck known as a stoma (medicine), stoma. This procedure is usually performed by an Ear, Nose and Throat, ENT surgeon in cases of laryngeal cancer. Many cases of laryngeal cancer are treated with more conservative methods (surgeries through the mouth, radiation and/or chemotherapy). In anatomy, a stoma (plural stomata or stomas) is any opening in the body. For example, a mouth, a nose, and an anus are natural stomata. Laryngeal Cancer
Laryngeal cancers are mostly squamous-cell carcinomas, reflecting their origin from the epithelium of the larynx. Cancer can develop in any part of the larynx. The prognosis is affected by the location of the tumour. For the purposes of staging, the larynx is divided into three anatomical regions: the glottis (true vocal cords, anterior and posterior commissures); the supraglottis (epiglottis, arytenoids and aryepiglottic folds, and false cords); and the subglottis. Most laryngeal cancers originate in the glottis, with supraglottic and subglottic tumours being less frequent.
