Debenhams plc was a British department store chain operating in the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Republic of Ireland. It was founded in 1778 as a single store in London and grew to 178 locations across those countries, also owning the Danish department store chain Magasin du Nord. In its final years, its headquarters were within the premises of its flagship store in Oxford Street, London. The range of goods sold included middle-to-high-end clothing, beauty, household items, and furniture. The company suffered financial difficulties in the 21st century and entered administration twice, in April 2019 and April 2020. In November 2020, Debenhams' main concession operator Arcadia also entered administration, leading to the collapse of talks with JD Sports and Frasers Group over a potential rescue. Ernest Debenham
Sir Ernest Ridley Debenham, 1st Baronet (26 May 1865 – 25 December 1952), was an English businessman. He was responsible for the considerable expansion of the family's retail and wholesale drapery firm between 1892 and 1927. Biography Born at 42 Wigmore Street, Marylebone, he was the son of Frank Debenham and his wife Emma Folkard ''née'' Ridley. Educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, At the age of 27 he joined the successful business of Debenham & Co., which had been run by his grandfather and father. William Debenham
William Debenham (; 18 April 1794 – 24 September 1863) was the founder of Debenhams, once one of the largest retailers in the United Kingdom. Career Born in 1794 in Alpheton in Suffolk, William Debenham joined Thomas Clark in a partnership to manage a draper's store at 44 Wigmore Street in London. The partners later expanded the business such that it had stores on both sides of Wigmore Street, one known as ''Debenham & Clark'' and the other known as ''Clark & Debenham''. Arcadia Group Ltd (formerly Arcadia Group plc and, until 1998, Burton Group plc) was a British multinational retailing company headquartered in London, England. Magasin is a Danish chain of department stores. It has seven department stores with its flagship store located on Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen. The company is a subsidiary of the German department store retailer Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf, Magasin du Nord has been a founder and remained member of the International Association of department stores since 1928. History The company traces its roots back to 1868 when Theodor Wessel and Emil Vett opened a draper's shop in Aarhus under the name Emil Vett & Co.
