''Death in Sarajevo'' ( bs, Smrt u Sarajevu) is a 2016 Bosnian drama film directed by Danis Tanović. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. At Berlin it won the Jury Grand Prix, as well as FIPRESCI prize for films shown in competition. It was selected as the Bosnian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards but it was not nominated. Danis Tanović
Danis Tanović (born 20 February 1969) is a Bosnian film director and screenwriter. He is best known for having directed and written the script for the 2001 Bosnian movie ''No Man's Land'' which won him many awards, including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film among many others. Tanović has also written and directed the award-winning Bosnian films '' An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker'' and '' Death in Sarajevo''. He is regarded as one of the best Bosnian directors and screenwriters of all time, and also one of the best from Southeast Europe. Tanović is the only person born in the territory of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina to have won an Academy Award. Bosnia and Herzegovina has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1994. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Bosnia and Herzegovina has submitted twenty films for consideration and two, Danis Tanović's ''No Man's Land'' and Jasmila Žbanić's '' Quo Vadis, Aida?'', have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This is a list of submissions to the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016. The deadline for submissions was 3 October 2016, with the Academy announcing a list of eligible films on 11 October.
