Dean Walsh
Dean Walsh (born 25 June 1994) is current 2023 71 kg national elite Irish champion. His achievements include five Irish Elite titles and a bronze medal at the 2015 European Championships in Bulgaria. Amateur career Walsh boxed for St. Ibar's Boxing Club, Wexford where he was trained by his uncle Billy Walsh. Walsh started boxing in 2001 before participating in the 2010 European Junior Championships in Ukraine, where he finished sixth. In 2011, he finished runner-up at the Irish Youth Championships, won the Irish Intermediate Championships in 2012, and won the Irish U-22 Championships 2013. At the Feliks Stamm Tournament in 2014 he won a bronze medal after beating Bogdan Vikazin in the semi-finals before being eliminated by Vitaly Dunaytsev . Wexford Town
Wexford () is the county town of County Wexford, Ireland. Wexford lies on the south side of Wexford Harbour, the estuary of the River Slaney near the southeastern corner of the island of Ireland. The town is linked to Dublin by the M11/N11 National Primary Route; and to Rosslare Europort, Cork and Waterford by the N25. The national rail network connects it to Dublin and Rosslare Europort. Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 pounds. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1946, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Boxing Blade'' magazine. There was not widespread acceptance of this new weight division in its early years, and the New York State Athletic Commission withdrew recognition of it in 1930.
