Bishop Of Meath
The Bishop of Meath is an episcopal title which takes its name after the ancient Kingdom of Meath. In the Roman Catholic Church it remains as a separate title, but in the Church of Ireland it has been united with another bishopric. History Until the early twelfth century, the Kingdom of Meath had been divided into eight small monastic episcopal sees, which were located at Clonard, Duleek, Kells, Trim, Ardbraccan, Dunshaughlin, Slane, and Fore. By the time of the Synod of Rathbreasail, held in 1111, the last five had been united to the see of Clonard. Duleek was still recognized as a separate bishopric at the Synod of Kells, held in 1152, but disappeared not long after that date. The see of Kells was ruled together with Breifne (later Kilmore) in the second half of the twelfth century, but after 1211 Kells was incorporated into the diocese of Meath. Stephen Forde
Stephen Forde (born 1961) is a Church of Ireland clergyman, and the Dean of Belfast Cathedral. Education He was born in Banbridge and educated at Campbell College. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and Trinity College, Dublin. Ordained ministry Forde was ordained in the Church of Ireland as a deacon in 1986 and as a priest in 1987. After a curacy at St Mary, Crumlin Road, he was chaplain to Samuel Poyntz, the then Bishop of Connor; and also chaplain of Queen's University Belfast (QUB) from 1989 until 1995. He was the incumbent at Booterstown from 1995 to 1999, then Larne. In 2006, Forde was appointed Archdeacon of Dalriada. In October 2017, it was announced that he would be the next Dean of St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast. Houston McKelvey
Robert Samuel James Houston McKelvey, OBE, QVRM, TD (born 3 September 1942) was the Dean of Belfast. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution (1954–61), Queen's University Belfast, 1961-65 and Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1968. He was Curate at Dunmurry until 1970, when he was appointed Rector of Kilmakee- a post he held for 12 years. He was Secretary of the General Synod Board of Education (Northern Ireland) from then until 2001 when he became Dean of Belfast, in which capacity he served at St Anne's Cathedral until 2011. During his tenure as Dean of Belfast he was at times involved in controversy, notably in 2003 (relating to perceived lack of government support for St Anne's as a tourist attraction), and in 2010-11 (relating to the departure of the composer Philip Stopford, who had been the Director of Music). John "Jack" Shearer (30 December 1926 – 12 January 2001) was a Church of Ireland clergyman and the Dean of Belfast cathedral. Life He was born in Belfast and educated at Belfast Technical High School before studying at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1950. He was ordained in 1950. After two years in Magheralin Parish, County Down he served for seven years in St Patrick's Parish, Ballymacarrett, before becoming rector of Magheradoll, Ballynahinch. He then became Rector of Seagoe from 1964 to 1985, becoming Archdeacon of Dromore in 1970. Samuel Bennett Crooks
Samuel Bennett Crooks was Dean of Belfast in the last third of the 20th century. He was born on 20 January 1920 into an ecclesiastical family (his father was the Rev. S. B. Crooks, Rector of Killough, Co. Down and then St Stephen’s, Belfast) and educated at Down High School and Trinity College, Dublin. He was ordained in 1944 and became Dean's Vicar and then Vicar Choral at St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, until 1949, when he was appointed Rector of St John’s, Orangefield. Later he became Rector of Christ Church Lurgan, then the largest parish in the Church of Ireland, Rural Dean of Hillsborough and Archdeacon of Dromore. In 1970 he became Dean of Belfast, a post he held for 15 years. Cuthbert Irvine Peacocke TD (26 April 1903 – 6 April 1994) was the 8th Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, retiring in 1975. Peacocke was born at St Mary's Rectory, Dublin, son of Rt. Revd Joseph Irvine Peacocke, bishop of Derry and Raphoe 1916–1945. He was educated at Saint Columba's College, Dublin and Trinity College, Dublin, and ordained in 1927. His first post was a curacy at Seapatrick. He graduated with a B.A. 1925, an M.A. 1929. He was ordained deacon in 1926 and was curate of Seapatrick (Dromore) in the period 1926–1930. Robert Cyril Hamilton Glover Elliott (known as Cyril; 1890–1977) was an eminent Irish clergyman in the middle of the 20th century. Ordained in 1915, he began his career as a chaplain to the Forces, after which he was Rector of All Saints, Belfast, Vicar of Ballymacarrett then Rector of Downpatrick. Promotion to be Dean of St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, followed, after which he was elevated to the episcopate as Bishop of Connor.
