The Deadly Awards, commonly known simply as The Deadlys, was an annual celebration of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement in music, sport, entertainment and community. The event was held from 1995 to 2013. Description The Deadlys were an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement in music, sport, entertainment and community. The word " deadly" is a modern colloquialism used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to indicate "great or wonderful". History The first Deadlys were held in 1995, at the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-op in the Redfern suburb of Sydney. They stemmed from Boomalli's 1993 ''Deadly Sounds'' music and culture radio show, and were driven by Gavin Jones. Gerry Turpin
Gerald Leslie "Gerry" Turpin (1 September 1925, Wandsworth, London – 16 September 1997, North Cotswold, Gloucestershire) was an English cinematographer. Biography Turpin began his career in 1945 at Ealing Studios as a camera assistant to Douglas Slocombe and Stanley Pavey. From 1953, he worked as a camera operator, and worked with Pavey, Gordon Dines, Desmond Dickinson, Otto Heller, Gilbert Taylor, Reginald H. Wyer and Harry Waxman. He made his first film as director of photography, '' The Queen's Guards'' (1961) with director Michael Powell. For his first collaboration with Bryan Forbes, '' Seance on a Wet Afternoon'' (1964), he received a nomination at the British Academy Film Awards in 1965. Shellie Morris
Shellie Morris is an Indigenous Australian singer/songwriter who plays a mix of contemporary folk music and contemporary acoustic ballads. Biography and career Shellie Morris was raised in Sydney and began singing at an early age. She often performed in Church choirs in her twenties and in the 1990s Morris moved to Darwin, Northern Territory to find her Indigenous family. She completed a Certificate 3 in Contemporary music at N.T.U in Darwin and then began working with producer/ musician/ songwriter Glen Heald for the next ten years who produced the albums ''Shellie Morris'' and ''Waiting Road''. Morris toured with Yothu Yindi in 2001 and also performed with Neil Murray from the Warumpi Band. 3CR is a community radio station that broadcasts on the AM band and on the digital spectrum as 3CR Digital in Melbourne, Australia. It features mainly talk-based programs with political (particularly trade unions) and environmental themes, as well as some music and community language-based programs. Today the station hosts over 130 programs presented by over 400 volunteers. The radio station is located in Smith Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. Brenda L Croft
Brenda L Croft (born 1964) is an Aboriginal Australian artist, curator, writer, and educator working across contemporary Indigenous and mainstream arts and cultural sectors. Croft was a founding member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in 1987. Early life and education Croft was born in 1964 in Perth, and is from the Gurindji, Malngin and Mudburra peoples, as well as having Anglo-Australian/German/Irish/Chinese heritage. She completed the first year of a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sydney College of Arts, University of Sydney in 1985. The degree remained incomplete when Croft commenced voluntary work in community activism and public radio (Radio Redfern/Radio Skid Row, 88.9 FM) in the lead-up to the Australian Bicentenary in 1988. Ella Havelka
Ella Havelka (born 1989) is an Australian ballet dancer who is the first Indigenous person to join The Australian Ballet. Early life Havelka was born in Dubbo, New South Wales, and is a descendant of the Wiradjuri people. She was raised by a single mother. She started ballet at a local studio after she watched a video of '' Swan Lake''. At age 15, Havelka and her mother moved to Melbourne to train at the Australian Ballet School and graduated in 2007. Career After graduating from the Australian Ballet School, she was not offered a place with The Australian Ballet.
