Dead Can Dance (1981–1998)
''Dead Can Dance (1981–1998)'' (2001) is a four-disc box set, containing three CDs of music spanning Dead Can Dance's career and a DVD of their 1994 video release ''Toward the Within''. While most of the tracks are taken from previously released albums, this set also contains a large number of rarities. "Frontier" (Demo) and "The Protagonist" were originally released on the 1987 4AD compilation '' Lonely Is an Eyesore''. "Labour of Love", "Ocean", "Orion", and "Threshold" were recorded for the John Peel Show in 1983. In 1984, a follow-up Peel Session produced the version of "Carnival of Light" contained in this set. "Sloth" (Radio) was recorded for radio and a studio version was later released on Brendan Perry's solo album ''Eye of the Hunter''. "Bylar", a Lisa Gerrard and Robert Perry (Brendan's brother) composition, was taken from a live performance recorded on 10 July 1996 at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania for the Echoes public radio show. Toward The Within
''Toward the Within'' (1994) is the first official live album of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's group Dead Can Dance. It contains 15 songs, of which only four appeared on their previous albums, and two of which were later re-recorded and included on Lisa Gerrard's first solo album, ''The Mirror Pool''. The others previously existed only in live performances and unofficial bootlegs, but were not officially released until ''Toward the Within''. Along with Perry and Gerrard were a number of musicians who had performed with them on other occasions. Overview ''Toward the Within'' was recorded in one take in November 1993 at the Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica, California and was released by 4AD as an album and a video ( VHS and LaserDisc) a year later. Glenside is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Cheltenham Township and Abington Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. It borders Northwest Philadelphia. The population was 7,737 at the 2020 census on a land area of 1.3 square miles. Glenside is most notable for its entertainment, such as the Keswick Theatre, restaurants, recreational facilities and parks. The Glenside station is one of the busiest in the SEPTA system. Keswick Theatre
The Keswick Theatre is a privately owned theater in the Keswick Village section of Glenside, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Horace Trumbauer designed the exterior in the Tudor Revival Style, which has remained essentially unaltered. When opened it had 1,366 seats. The first performance was on Christmas Day in 1928 in a private event held for the Kiwanis Club. The Keswick Theatre opened to the public on December 27 with vaudeville and the film '' Glorious Betsy''. Shot as a silent film with some speaking sequences, the Keswick showed a silent version as the sound equipment was not yet ready. In 1955 the theatre was renovated to show CinemaScope films. The theatre operated until 1980. After closing it was threatened with demolition until a community group formed to re-open it as a live performance venue. ''Eye of the Hunter'' is the debut solo album by Brendan Perry, previously the male half of the band Dead Can Dance. The album was released by 4AD on 4 October 1999 in the UK and a day later in the US. Overview The album's title is found in the lyrics of the album's first single "Voyage of Bran", wherein a character called Brendan says: "''I live by the river where the old gods still dream of inner communion with the open sea / Through the eye of a hunter in search of a prey, neither beast nor human in my philosophy.''"Lyrics from the CD booklet (sung identically as printed).
