Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)
"Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" is a traditional Jamaican folk song. The song has mento influences, but it is commonly classified as an example of the better known calypso music. It is a call and response work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. The lyrics describe how daylight has come, their shift is over, and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home. The best-known version was released by Jamaican singer Harry Belafonte in 1956 (originally titled "Banana Boat (Day-O)") and later became one of his signature songs. That same year the Tarriers released an alternative version that incorporated the chorus of another Jamaican call and response folk song, "Hill and Gully Rider". Both versions became simultaneously popular the following year, placing 5th and 6th on the 20 February, 1957, US Top 40 Singles chart. Dayo Ade (born 1972) is a Canadian actor who has appeared in several television shows and films. His most notable role was in the ''Degrassi'' teen drama franchise, playing Bryant Lester "BLT" Thomas in ''Degrassi Junior High'' (1987-89) and ''Degrassi High'' (1989-91). More recently, he is known for his roles in series such as ''Workin' Moms''. Biography He was born in Lagos, Nigeria and moved with his family to Toronto, Ontario, Canada at an early age. Dayo Audi (Dayo Audifferen) is active in the sport of bodybuilding, not only as a competitor but also in training fitness enthusiasts and athletes up to national level. Dayo Audi achieved professional status in 1999, competing for the first time in the Masters Olympia in the US in August 2003, where he achieved 11th place. Dayo Audi holds regional, national, European and World titles from three major Federations, retiring from competitive bodybuilding in November 2008 after winning the WBBF Mr Universe title in Vilnius, Lithuania. He is also an International judge with the WFF, qualifying in 2002 and served in the same capacity with NABBA from 2003 until leaving the organisation in 2007. ''Reading the Ceiling'' is a 2007 novel by Dayo Forster. The book tells the story of eighteen-year-old Ayodele and explores three paths her life could take. Ayodele is a Gambian schoolgirl entering adulthood. One path takes her to university in England, and another to polygamy and motherhood. Owen Richardson, reviewing the novel in '' The Age'', compared it to Philip Roth's '' The Counterlife''. A reviewer for '' The Point'' praised Forster's use of local terminology and accurate portrayal of Gambian society, especially regarding the roles of women. In 2007, ''Reading the Ceiling'' was shortlisted for a Commonwealth Writers' Prize. In 2019 it was one of the '' New York Times'' travel selections, "52 Books for 52 Places." Dayo Gore (Dayo F. Gore) is an African-American feminist scholar, former fellow of Harvard's Warren Center for North American History, formerly employed as Assistant Professor of History and of Women's Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Gore is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at University of California, San Diego. Dayo Wong Tze-wah (born 5 September 1960) is a Hong Kong comedian, actor and singer. Known as a pioneer of stand-up comedy in Hong Kong, he is known for his stadium shows integrating political satire and social commentary. He has performed at the Hong Kong Coliseum, including 26 sold-out shows at his farewell stand-up performance. Issoufou Sellsavon Dayo (born 6 August 1991) is a Burkinabé professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for RS Berkane and the Burkina Faso national team.
