Daya Sahabandu
Dayananda Sahabandu (born 28 March 1940) is a former cricketer who played first-class cricket for Sri Lanka from 1968 to 1975. In September 2018, he was one of 49 former Sri Lankan cricketers felicitated by Sri Lanka Cricket, to honour them for their services before Sri Lanka became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Cricket career Daya Sahabandu attended Royal College, Colombo, where he played in the First XI from 1957 to 1960. A left-arm spin bowler who could also bowl a little faster and open the bowling, he began playing senior club cricket in Ceylon in the early 1960s, and in 20 seasons, mostly playing for Nomads Sports Club, he took more than 1000 wickets with his left-arm spin at an average of just over 14. He was selected to tour England with the Ceylon team in 1968, but the tour was cancelled just before it was due to begin. The England national cricket team, under the auspices of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), toured Ceylon and Pakistan from January to March 1969 and played a three-match Test series against the Pakistani national cricket team. The Test series was drawn 0–0. England were captained by Colin Cowdrey and Pakistan by Saeed Ahmed. Wellawatte
Wellawatta is a neighbourhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It lies immediately south of Bambalapitiya and is classified as zone 6 within the Colombo Municipal region. The town begins at the old Dutch canal just before the Savoy Cinema and extends south to the same canal that reaches the sea just before the junction at Hospital Road where Dehiwela begins. It is bounded on the west by the waters of the Indian Ocean and extends to Pamankada where Havelock Road forks and meets the Sri Saranankara Road bridge, which stretches over the Dutch canal, extending towards Kohuwala-Hospital Road junction on Dutugemunu Street. The name ''Wellawatta'' means 'Sandy Garden' in Sinhalese and 'White Garden' in Tamil. The Colombo Municipal Council is the municipal governing body of Colombo, the largest city and financial centre in Sri Lanka. It consists of a directly elected executive Mayor of Colombo, current elect is Rosy Senanayake, and 119 elected 119 municipal councilors. Gopalan Trophy
The M. J. Gopalan Trophy was an annual first-class cricket competition played between Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Madras (now Tamil Nadu) between 1952–53 and 2007–08. History The idea of the competition came about with the starting of a silver jubilee fund in 1952 to celebrate M.J. Gopalan's 25 years as a cricket and hockey player. Through the fund, an annual cricket match was instituted between Madras and Ceylon and named after Gopalan. The trophy was donated by the Madras cricket administrator V. Pattabhiraman and was presented to the victors after the first match by Learie Constantine. Ceylon won the first match. The match became a regular fixture in the calendar until Sri Lanka received Test status and the competition was stopped. It was revived in 2000 with a match between Tamil Nadu and a Colombo District Cricket Association.
