Dawley Passage Provincial Park
Dawley Passage Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, located at the south end of Fortune Channel, which lies between Meares Island and the mainland of Vancouver Island just south. The park is to the north of the resort town of Tofino and is accessible by boat only. It was created on July 13, 1995 as part of the Clayoquot Land-Use Decision and contains , ( of upland and of foreshore). The park's name comes from Dawley Passage which is a tidal narrows with strong currents and abundant marine life, which makes it popular for scuba diving. Dawley Passage was named for Walter P. Dawley, a trader from Victoria who salvaged lumber from shipwrecks and at one time operated a store and hotel at Clayoquot and eventually owned stores at Ahousat, Nootka and Neuchatlitz Inlet. Ahousat, British Columbia
Ahousaht, also spelled Ahousat ( or )), is the principal settlement on Flores Island (British Columbia), Flores Island, in British Columbia, Canada. Accessible only by water or air, Ahousaht is a small community predominantly composed of First Nations people from the Nuu-chah-nulth people, Nuu-chah-nulth nation. The settlement is named for the Ahousaht subgroup of the Nuu-chah-nulth, whose modern Indian Act government is the Ahousaht First Nation which combines the Ahousaht, Manhousaht and Keltsmaht under one administration. Vargas Island Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, comprising the west side of the island of the same name, which is located west of Meares Island and northwest of the resort community of Tofino in the Clayoquot Sound region of the West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The park was created as part of the Clayoquot Land-Use Decision on July 13, 1995 and contains , of it being upland and being foreshore. Also located on Vargas Island, on its north side, is Epper Passage Provincial Park. This island is home to the mammalian species of black bear, cougar, and wolf. Clayoquot, British Columbia
Clayoquot, Stubbs Island, is virtually a ghost town on the west coast of central Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The former steamboat landing is about by boat northwest of Tofino, which is by road about west of Parksville at the terminus of BC Highway 4. Name origin The island was named after Captain Napoleon Fitz Stubbs, who circumnavigated Vancouver Island in 1861. Clayoquot became the accepted anglicization of the Nuu-chah-nulth language name "Tla-o-qui-aht", an indigenous tribe of the region. The first syllable means another or different. The second syllable means people or village. The word describes a people different from what they were, namely peaceable who became warlike. Historically, Clayoquot designated all settlement on Stubbs and Meares islands and the main peninsular to their southeast. The principal settlement on that peninsular was later called Tofino.
