Davidson Automobile Battery Armored Car
The Davidson Auto Battery armored car was a further development of the Davidson-Duryea gun carriage but with steam power. Davidson-Duryea Gun Carriage
The Davidson-Duryea gun carriage was a 3- and 4-wheeled armed armored vehicle manufactured in 1898 and 1899 for military use. Development history Royal Page Davidson of the Northwestern Military Academy in Highland Park, Illinois, was doing some experimenting about this time with automobile chassis, modifying them and adding machine guns with armored shielding for protection of the driver. Davidson was the leading pioneer of armored military vehicles in the United States. Davidson designed the military gun carriage vehicle and ordered it to be built from the Peoria Rubber and Manufacturing Company. He used patents of Charles Duryea, a well-known automobile manufacturer of the time. Charles Duryea, with his automobile manufacturing company, put it into an automobile-style patent which he filed for on May 16, 1898. It was finally approved as Patent No. 653,224 on July 10, 1900. Royal Page Davidson
Royal Page Davidson (October 9, 1870January 16, 1943) was an American scholar, educator, professor, and inventor. He is associated with helping to organize Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Highland Park, Illinois. He reestablished it in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He organized the first US military bicycle corps and was the leading pioneer of armored military vehicles in the United States. He invented or helped innovate the first armored anti-aircraft military vehicle, the first armored military radio car, the first armored military field kitchen truck, and the first armored military hospital vehicle. He is labeled the "father" of the American military armored vehicle. Early life Davidson was born in Somerville, New Jersey, on October 9, 1870. Northwestern Military And Naval Academy
Northwestern Military Academy (founded 1888) was a high school in Linn, Wisconsin which was founded by Harlan Page Davidson. Originally located in Highland Park, Illinois, the school was relocated to the town of Linn, Wisconsin on the south shore of Geneva Lake near the city of Lake Geneva in 1915 and was renamed Northwestern Military and Naval Academy (NMNA) before merging with SJNMA. During the academy's century of operation at this location , its primary goal was to mold young men, grades 7–12, into outstanding citizens, eager and ready for higher levels of education. Highland Park, Illinois
Highland Park is a suburban city located in the southeastern part of Lake County, Illinois, United States, about north of downtown Chicago. Per the 2020 census, the population was 30,176. Highland Park is one of several municipalities located on the North Shore of the Chicago metropolitan area. History A traveler in the area in 1833 described visiting a village of bark-covered structures where he ate roasted corn with a chief named Nic-sa-mah at a site likely located south of present-day Clavey Road and east of the Edens Expressway. In 1847, two German immigrants, John Hettinger and John Peterman founded a town along Lake Michigan, which they called St. John's. Soon, the town was abandoned, due to questions regarding ownership of the land.
