David Sheppard
David Stuart Sheppard, Baron Sheppard of Liverpool (6 March 1929 – 5 March 2005) was a Church of England Bishop of Liverpool who played cricket for Sussex and England in his youth. Sheppard remains the only ordained minister to have played Test cricket, though others such as Tom Killick were ordained after playing Tests. Early life Sheppard was born in Reigate and brought up in Charlwood, Surrey. His father was a solicitor, and a cousin of Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H; his mother was the daughter of the artist and illustrator, William James Affleck Shepherd (1866–1946). His family moved to Sussex after his father died in the late 1930s. He was educated at Northcliffe House School in Bognor Regis and then at Sherborne School, Dorset, where his cricketing talent first emerged. David Shepherd (rugby Union)
David John Shepherd (1936 – 1 October 2003) was an advertising executive and one of the few Englishmen to play for the Australia national rugby union team. David Shepherd was one of the rare men who graduated from club rugby in Melbourne through the Victorian state team to the ranks of the Wallabies. He played his first Test against New Zealand in 1964 and was capped four times more before a crippling injury forced his early retirement from the game. Early life Shepherd was born in Cheshire and boarded at Blundell's School in Devon. He was 17 when his father was sent to Australia in 1953 to become chairman of Unilever. Shepherd joined the advertising industry, which suited his intellect and his insightful knowledge of others, especially regarding how they were motivated. David Shepherd (umpire)
David Robert Shepherd (27 December 1940 – 27 October 2009) was a first-class cricketer who played county cricket for Gloucestershire, and later became one of the cricket world's best-known umpires. He stood in 92 Test matches, the last of them in June 2005, the most for any English umpire. He also umpired 172 ODIs, including three consecutive World Cup finals in 1996, 1999 and 2003. Early life Shepherd was born in Bideford in Devon. His father Herbert was a sub- postmaster, having earlier worked in the Merchant Navy. His father had played cricket and rugby in his youth, and became an umpire for North Devon Cricket Club after losing the sight in one eye in the First World War. Shepherd's brother Bill was also a cricketer who captained MCC Young Professionals, but became postmaster at his parents' post office in Instow in the 1960s, playing club and the Minor Counties cricket.
