David Sanchez (activist)
David Sanchez (born January 3, 1948) is an American civil rights activist, and founding member of the Brown Berets. In the 1960s and 70s he was heavily involved in the Chicano civil rights and political movements. Background An accomplished student in high school, in 1966 Sanchez chaired Mayor Sam Yorty's youth council. However personal experiences with police brutality from the LAPD radicalized his politics and world view. With other high school students, Sanchez helped found the Young Chicanos for Community Action. With his leadership, the Young Chicanos For Community Action eventually became the Brown Berets. The Brown Berets advocated for better schools and the fair treatment of Mexican-Americans in Los Angeles. The organization also worked on farmworkers' rights, opposition to the Vietnam War, and organizing against police brutality. National Chicano Moratorium March
The Chicano Moratorium, formally known as the National Chicano Moratorium Committee Against The Vietnam War, was a movement of Chicano anti-war activists that built a broad-based coalition of Mexican-American groups to organize opposition to the Vietnam War. Led by activists from local colleges and members of the Brown Berets, a group with roots in the high school student movement that staged walkouts in 1968, the coalition peaked with a August 29, 1970 march in East Los Angeles, California, East Los Angeles that drew 30,000 demonstrators. The march was described by scholar Lorena Oropeza as "one of the largest assemblages of Mexican Americans ever." It was the largest anti-war action taken by any single ethnic group in the USA. Lucille Roybal-Allard
Lucille Elsa Roybal-Allard (born June 12, 1941) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, she first entered Congress in 1993. Her district, numbered as the 33rd until 2003 and then the 34th, includes much of southern Los Angeles, as well as several eastern suburbs, such as Downey, Bell and Bell Gardens. José Huizar
José Luis Huizar (born September 10, 1968) is a Mexican-American politician and a former member of the Los Angeles City Council. Huizar was arrested and indicted on June 23, 2020, on federal corruption charges. Huizar was elected on November 8, 2005, in a special election to fill the seat vacated by the then-mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa. He was re-elected to a full four-year term in 2007 and again in 2011. In 2015, he was re-elected but to a term of an extended term due to new city laws, though this term was cut short by his 2020 indictment. Los Angeles City Council District 14 is one of the 15 districts of the Los Angeles City Council. The district, which has a large Latin American population, includes the neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, Downtown Los Angeles and parts of Northeast Los Angeles.
