David Saelens
David Saelens (born 2 July 1975 in Ypres, West Flanders) is a racing driver from Belgium. He drove in several racing classes such as Formula Three, International Formula 3000, American Le Mans Series, DTM and most recently the 2018 Porsche Supercup. In 1998 he won the Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort. In 1998 he became the first non-French driver to win the French Formula Three Championship. Ypres
Ypres ( , ; nl, Ieper ; vls, Yper; german: Ypern ) is a Belgian city and municipality in the province of West Flanders. 1998 Masters Of Formula 3
The 1998 Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 was the eighth Masters of Formula 3 race held at Circuit Park Zandvoort on 9 August 1998. It was won by David Saelens, for ASM Fina. Drivers and teams Format changes With an entry of 47 cars, race organisers changed the format of qualifying to allow every driver a shot at qualifying for the Marlboro Masters itself. The field would be split into two groups; one for even-numbered cars and one for odd-numbered cars. Then there would be a qualifying session for each group, with that setting the grid for each group's qualification race. Each qualification race would see the top fourteen cars progressing through to the Marlboro Masters itself, with the pole position being awarded to the winner of the qualification race that was won in the quickest time. 1998 British Formula Three Championship
The 1998 British Formula Three season was the 48th British Formula Three Championship season. It commenced on 22 March, and ended on 4 October after sixteen races. Mario Haberfeld was the champion, while Phillip Scifleet won the Class B championship. The season was one of two halves as Enrique Bernoldi dominated the first half of the season and compatriot Haberfeld the second; ultimately the latter would prevail thanks in part to his stronger consistency. The 1997 Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 was the seventh Masters of Formula 3 race held at Circuit Park Zandvoort on 3 August 1997. It was won by Tom Coronel, for TOM'S after he started from fourth place. Drivers and teams Format changes With an entry of 51 cars, race organisers changed the format of qualifying to allow every driver a shot at qualifying for the Marlboro Masters itself. The top 28 drivers from qualifying were automatically entered into the race, with the remaining drivers going into a qualifying race, as seen at the Macau Grand Prix. 1997 British Formula Three Championship
The 1997 British Formula Three season was the 47th British Formula Three Championship, won by Jonny Kane. The season started on 23 March at Donington Park and ended at Thruxton on 12 October following sixteen races. Kane built on a strong finish to his 1996 campaign by scoring podium finishes at each of the first six races in 1997. This would be enough to keep title rival Nicolas Minassian at bay, who was hindered by a disqualification from second place and a two-race ban for unsportsmanlike behaviour at the third round at Thruxton. The Frenchman was baulked by backmarker Michael Bentwood whilst leading, allowing Kane to overtake and take victory. After the chequered flag, the infuriated Minassian proceeded to brake-test Bentwood to a halt and hurl gravel towards the Englishman. ART Grand Prix is a French motor racing team that competes in formula single-seaters in Europe. In 2012, it competed in the GP2 Series and GP3 Series as Lotus GP to reflect sponsorship from British sports and racing car manufacturer Lotus. The team competed as Lotus ART in 2011.
