David Probert
David Probert (born 1988) is a Welsh jockey who was joint British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 2008. Background Probert was born in Bargoed, Wales, attended Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni Welsh language school, and grew up competing in pony racing and Gymkhana in and around Wales. He attended the British Racing School in Newmarket. Riding career Since leaving the school, he has ridden for Andrew Balding, and has had Ian Balding as a mentor, although his first winner was Mountain Pass for John Lewis Llewellyn in 2007. In 2008, he won the British flat racing Champion Apprentice title jointly with William Buick. In 2012, he won the Investec Derby Trial on Goldoni. That same year, he won his first group race, the Group 2 Oettingen-Rennen on what he called "the best horse I've ever ridden", Highland Knight. Bargoed
Bargoed ( cy, Bargod) is a town and community in the Rhymney Valley, Wales, one of the South Wales Valleys. It lies on the Rhymney River in the county borough of Caerphilly. It straddles the ancient boundary of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with Bargoed lying in Glamorgan and Aberbargoed in Monmouthshire. 'Greater Bargoed', as defined by the local authority Caerphilly County Borough Council, consists of the towns of Bargoed and Aberbargoed and the village of Gilfach. Darley Stakes
The Darley Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile and 1 furlong (1,811 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. History The event was established in 1987, but the inaugural running was abandoned because of high winds and structural damage. For a period the race held Listed status, and it was promoted to Group 3 level in 2003. The Darley Stakes was formerly staged during Newmarket's Champions' Meeting in mid-October. It became part of a new fixture called Future Champions Day in 2011. Lochsong
Lochsong (26 April 1988 – 27 May 2014) was a bay Thoroughbred filly who twice won the Cartier Award as Top European Sprinter and was voted 1993 European Horse of the Year. Background Lochsong was a bay mare bred by her owner, Jeff Smith's Littleton stud. Racing career As a two and three-year-old in racing, Lochsong accomplished little until Ian Balding took over as her trainer. In 1992 the filly won the rare Sprint-Handicap triple of Stewards' Cup, Portland Handicap and Ayr Gold Cup. The filly won numerous other top races including the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes as well as twice capturing the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp in Paris, France. Goodwood Racecourse
Goodwood Racecourse is a horse-racing track five miles north of Chichester, West Sussex, in England controlled by the family of the Duke of Richmond, whose seat is nearby Goodwood House. It hosts the annual Glorious Goodwood meeting in late July and early August, which is one of the highlights of the British flat racing calendar, and is home to three of the UK's 36 annual Group 1 flat races, the Sussex Stakes, the Goodwood Cup and the Nassau Stakes. The Stewards' Cup is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Goodwood over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July or early August. History For several years in the 1830s the senior steward at Goodwood presented an annual cup to the winner of any race of his choosing. The choice varied each year, and the trophy was awarded for events with distances of up to 1½ miles. A perpetual race for the Stewards' Cup over a sprint distance of 6 furlongs was conceived by Lord George Bentinck in late 1839, and the inaugural running took place the following summer. Sandown Classic Trial
The Sandown Classic Trial is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old horses. It is run over a distance of 1 mile, 1 furlong and 209 yards () at Sandown Park in late April. History The event was established in 1953, and it was originally called the Royal Stakes. The first running was won by Mountain King. Ladbrokes became the sponsor of the race in 1971, and from this point it was known as the Ladbroke Classic Trial. It took place at Kempton Park in 1973. Brighton Racecourse
Brighton Racecourse is an English horse racing venue located a mile to the northeast of the centre of Brighton, Sussex, owned by the Arena Racing Company. Location and layout It is situated on Whitehawk Hill, on the edge of the South Downs, about four hundred feet above sea level and a mile from the coast. The geology of the downs is Middle Chalk; therefore the going is nearly always good. The track has the form of a horseshoe one-and-a-half miles in length. This makes it one of the few British courses not to form a complete circuit, like Epsom with which Brighton is sometimes compared. The finishing straight is about four furlongs in length, with a steep descent followed by a slightly-less-steep climb to the winning post. It is a left-handed course, used for flat racing only.
