Davey O'Brien
Robert David O'Brien (June 22, 1917 – November 18, 1977) was an American football quarterback. He played college football at Texas Christian University (TCU) and professionally in the National Football League (NFL) with the Philadelphia Eagles for two seasons. In 1938, O'Brien won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award, and was the fourth overall pick of the 1939 NFL draft. O'Brien was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. Since 1981, the Davey O'Brien Award is given annually to the best quarterback in college football. Early life Born in Dallas, Texas, O'Brien played high school football at its Woodrow Wilson High School. He was an All-State selection and led the high school to the Texas state playoffs in 1932. David P. O'Brien (March 16, 1956 – March 1, 2014) was an American collegiate athletic director at Long Beach State College in Long Beach, California, Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He was also an associate teaching professor and program director of sports management at Drexel University, an editor of College Sports Business News and managing partner of O'Brien Sports Group. O'Brien was athletic director at Long Beach State from 1989 to 1996 and oversaw two major moves: cutting the football program in 1991 and building the Walter Pyramid, the basketball arena which opened in 1994. During O'Brien's tenure at Temple (1996–2002), the Temple Owls' men's basketball team went 135–65 and made it to the NCAA Basketball Tournament in five of six seasons under head coach John Chaney. David O'Brien (born August 3, 1963) is an American sportscaster who is a lead play-by-play announcer on the New England Sports Network (NESN) for telecasts of the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB), and for college football and college basketball games aired on the ESPN Inc.-owned ACC Network. David O'Brien (born 28 January 1983) is a retired British swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a single-time Olympian (2004), a resident athlete of Team GB, and a member of Stirling Swimming Club, under head coach Chris Martin. O'Brien qualified for the men's 4×200 m freestyle relay, as a member of the British team, at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He finished sixth in the 200 m freestyle from the Olympic trials in Sheffield, posting a relay entry time of 1:51.12. David O'Brien (born 24 January 1984 in Stirling) is a Scottish former professional footballer who used to play as a left-sided midfielder, for home-town side Stirling University now acts as a coach. He has also played for Stirling Albion, Dundee and Ayr United. Career O'Brien started his career with Stirling Albion in 2001, after joining from amateur side Denny Amateurs, and helped them win the Second Division play-off final against Airdrie United in 2007. Life and career Born in Big Spring, Texas, O'Brien started his film career performing in choruses and working as a stunt double before gradually winning larger roles, mostly in B pictures. O'Brien was best known to movie audiences in the 1940s as the hero of the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer comedy short film series ''Pete Smith Specialties'' narrated by Pete Smith. David Wright O'Brien (1918–1944) was an American fantasy and science fiction writer. A nephew of Farnsworth Wright, editor of Weird Tales, he was 22 years old when his first story ("Truth Is a Plague!") appeared in the February 1940 issue of Amazing Stories. Between January 1941 and August 1942, he had more than fifty-seven stories published in pulp magazines like Amazing Stories and Fantastic Adventures, most of them written under the pen names John York Cabot, Duncan Farnsworth, Clee Garson and Richard Vardon. Some of the stories were co-written with his close friend William P. McGivern, with whom O'Brien shared an office in Chicago. He continued writing even after he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, adding "corporal" before all his pseudonyms. David O'Brien (October 1, 1937 – June 14, 1989) was an American actor best known for his long-running role as Dr. Steve Aldrich on the NBC daytime serial '' The Doctors'' (1967–82). Career Born in the Chicago suburb of Glencoe, O'Brien also had roles on numerous other soap operas, including ''The Secret Storm'', the primetime '' Our Private World'', ''Search for Tomorrow'', '' Ryan's Hope'', and '' Loving''.
