David Monette
David G. Monette (born 1956, Kalamazoo, Michigan) is an American craftsman who designs and builds custom brass instruments and mouthpieces for musicians. Monette's experience as a trumpeter and the influence of acoustician Arthur Benade led Monette to redesign the trumpet mouthpiece with the goal of improving playability and sound quality. Since the first mouthpieces reached the market in 1985, Monette has made mouthpieces for tuba, trombone, Bb, C ,D, Eb trumpet, and A and Bb piccolo trumpet. He has designed mouthpieces and trumpets for Maynard Ferguson, Wynton Marsalis and Charles Schlueter, as well as tubist Chester Schmitz. Kalamazoo, Michigan
Kalamazoo ( ) is a city in the southwest region of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County. At the 2010 census, Kalamazoo had a population of 74,262. Kalamazoo is the major city of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 335,340 in 2015. Kalamazoo is equidistant from Chicago and Detroit, being about 140 miles (225 kilometers) away from both. One of Kalamazoo's most notable features is the Kalamazoo Mall, an outdoor pedestrian shopping mall. The city created the mall in 1959 by closing part of Burdick Street to auto traffic, although two of the mall's four blocks have been reopened to auto traffic since 1999. Flumpet
The Flumpet is a hybrid brass instrument that shares the construction and timbral qualities of a trumpet and flugelhorn. The Flumpet was invented for Art Farmer by David Monette and is currently in production by Monette. The Flumpet is in the key of B♭. Design The Flumpet was designed in 1989 and borrows the three piston valve design of both the trumpet and flugelhorn and shares the same instrument length of a trumpet. The curves on the end of the Flumpet have a resemblance to shepherd's crooks. The mouthpiece (brass), mouthpiece is deeply conical which tapers slightly, as opposed to the trumpet mouthpiece which has an extreme taper to create a bowl shape. The sound of the Flumpet is described as thicker and richer than a flugelhorn and more mellow and rounded than that of a trumpet. During its creation, metal-worker David Monette wanted to produce an instrument that broke design barriers but ultimately maintained its usefulness. The Flumpet has been described as "capable of ...
