David Johnston
David Lloyd Johnston (born June 28, 1941) is a Canadian academic, author, and statesman who served from 2010 to 2017 as Governor General of Canada, the 28th since Canadian Confederation. He is the commissioner of the Leaders' Debates Commission and former Colonel of the Regiment for the Royal Canadian Regiment. Johnston was born and raised in Ontario, studying there before enrolling at Harvard University and later Cambridge and Queen's universities. He went on to work as a professor at various post-secondary institutions in Canada, eventually serving administrative roles as dean of law at the University of Western Ontario, principal of McGill University, and president of the University of Waterloo. The Yonder Mountain String Band is an American progressive bluegrass group from Nederland, Colorado. Composed of Dave Johnston, Ben Kaufmann, Adam Aijala, and Nick Piccininni, the band has released five studio albums and several live recordings to date. History Having met in Urbana, Illinois, banjo player Dave Johnston requested Jeff Austin to join and sing in his band The Bluegrassholes. Austin, who played no instrument, revealed to Johnston that he owned a mandolin, who then told him to come to the performance and "play anything, just play fast and loud." After the collapse of The Bluegrassholes, Johnston moved to Boulder, Colorado, in order to further his bluegrass musical skills. David Jhave Johnston is a Canadian poet, videographer, and motion graphics artist working chiefly in digital and computational media. This artist's work is often attributed, simply, to the name Jhave. Education and career Jhave completed his PhD at Concordia University in 2011, and taught between 2014 and 2017 at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, after which he returned to Montreal. David Johnston (or Johnstone) (3 January 1724 – 12 January 1809) was an American merchant and politician of Scottish descent who served as the president of the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York. Early life Johnston was born on 3 January 1724 at Perth Amboy in the Province of New Jersey, which was then a part of British America. He was the second son of John Johnston Jr., a major in the British Army, and the former Elizabeth Jamison. His elder brother, John Johnston, married their cousin, Euphemia Johnston (daughter of Andrew Johnston), and was Colonel of the New Jersey Provincial troops at the capture of Fort Niagara during the French and Indian War in 1758.
