David Johnston (Australian Footballer)
David Johnston (born 10 April 1969) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Fitzroy in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). A half back, Johnston represented Victoria in the 1985 Teal Cup, during which time he played Under-19s football for Essendon. He was playing for the Doutta Stars when he made it into Essendon's senior list and made his VFL debut in 1987. Johnston found it difficult to establish a place in the Essendon defence due to the strength of the team and never played more than half a season. He appeared in the last six games of the 1990 home and away season but wasn't picked in the finals, where Essendon were grand final losers. The Essendon Doutta Stars Football Club is an Australian rules football club located 10 km north west of Melbourne in the suburb of Essendon, Victoria, Essendon, and affiliated with the Essendon District Football League in 1946. History Doutta Stars began playing football at Buckley Park in West Essendon in 1946 and consisted mainly of returned soldiers looking for sporting opportunities. The team developed a sense of tradition that has formulated its successes on, and continues to play at this ground today. Buckley Park is also the home for the cricket team since 1967 and the bowling and tennis clubs. The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The AFL Under-19 Championships (for sponsorship reasons, the NAB AFL Under-19 Championships) is an annual Australian national underage representative championship in Australian rules football tournament. It is seen as one of the main pathways towards being drafted into a team in the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). The National Championships grew out of the Teal Cup which began in 1953 as a junior representative competition between the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. The 1992 AFL season was the 96th season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. The season featured fifteen clubs, ran from 21 March until 26 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top six clubs.
