David James Ramsay
David James Ramsay (April 23, 1948 – July 29, 2020) was a Canadian politician in Ontario. He was elected as a Ontario New Democratic Party, New Democratic member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1985 who crossed the floor a year later to join the Ontario Liberal Party, Liberal party. He represented the northern Ontario riding of Timiskaming (provincial electoral district), Timiskaming from 1985 to 1999 and the redistributed riding of Timiskaming—Cochrane (provincial electoral district), Timiskaming—Cochrane from 1999 to 2011. He served as a cabinet minister in the governments of David Peterson and Dalton McGuinty. Background Born in Australia, Ramsay moved to Canada with his parents at age one after having been adopted in Sydney, and was raised in Oakville, Ontario. A Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) is an elected member of the Legislative Assembly of the Canadian province of Ontario. Elsewhere in Canada, the titular designation "Member of Provincial Parliament" has also been used to refer to members of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1791 to 1838, and to members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1955 to 1968. Ontario The titular designation "Member of Provincial Parliament" and the acronym "MPP" were formally adopted by the Ontario legislature on April 7, 1938. Before the adoption of this resolution, members had no fixed designation. Prior to Confederation in 1867, members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada had been known by various titles, including MPP, MLA and MHA.
