David Hirshleifer
David Hirshleifer is an American economist. He is a professor of finance and currently holds the Merage chair in Business Growth at the University of California at Irvine. As of 2018 he became President-Elect of the American Finance Association. In 2017, he was elected as Vice President of the American Finance Association (AFA) and assigned as Research Associate to National Bureau of Economic Research. He was previously a professor at the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and UCLA. His research is mostly related to behavioral finance and informational cascades. In 2007, he was on the Top 100 list of most cited economist by Web of Science's Most-Cited Scientists in Economics & Business. Background David is the son of Jack Hirshleifer, a deceased UCLA economics professor. He is married to Siew Hong Teoh, Dean's Professor of accounting at the University of California at Irvine. Informational Cascades
An Information cascade or informational cascade is a phenomenon described in behavioral economics and network theory in which a number of people make the same decision in a sequential fashion. It is similar to, but distinct from herd behavior. An information cascade is generally accepted as a two-step process. For a cascade to begin an individual must encounter a scenario with a decision, typically a binary one. Second, outside factors can influence this decision (typically, through the observation of actions and their outcomes of other individuals in similar scenarios). Momentum (finance)
In finance, momentum is the empirically observed tendency for rising asset prices or securities return to rise further, and falling prices to keep falling. For instance, it was shown that stocks with strong past performance continue to outperform stocks with poor past performance in the next period with an average excess return of about 1% per month. Momentum signals (e.g., 52-week high) have been shown to be used by financial analysts in their buy and sell recommendations. The existence of momentum is a market anomaly, which finance theory struggles to explain. The difficulty is that an increase in asset prices, in and of itself, should not warrant further increase. Such increase, according to the efficient-market hypothesis, is warranted only by changes in demand and supply or new information (cf. fundamental analysis). Michael Skapinker
Michael Skapinker (born 1955 in South Africa) is a South African journalist. He is presently an Associate Editor of the Financial Times and a columnist. Life and career Education Skapinker graduated with a BA in Law from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and a Master's degree from Queens’ College, Cambridge. In financial economics, asset pricing refers to a formal treatment and development of two main pricing principles, outlined below, together with the resultant models. Social influence comprises the ways in which individuals adjust their behavior to meet the demands of a social environment. It takes many forms and can be seen in conformity, socialization, peer pressure, obedience, leadership, persuasion, sales, and marketing. Typically social influence results from a specific action, command, or request, but people also alter their attitudes and behaviors in response to what they perceive others might do or think.
