David Hamilton (composer)
David Blair Hamilton (born 21 December 1955) is a New Zealand composer and teacher. Biography Hamilton was born in Napier and studied composition with Douglas Mews and John Rimmer (composer), John Rimmer at the University of Auckland. He graduated in 1979 with an MMus. He trained as a teacher and joined the staff of Epsom Girls' Grammar School, Epsom Girls Grammar School, and was then Head of Music from 1986Simpson, A. (2001). Hamilton, David. Grove Music Online. John Rimmer (composer)
John Rimmer (born 5 February 1939) is a New Zealand composer. Biography John Francis Rimmer was born in Auckland. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 from the University of New Zealand in 1961, a Master of Arts in 1963 from the University of Auckland with Ronald Tremain, where he also completed post-graduate studies in musicology. He continued his studies, earning a Doctor of Music degree in 1972 from the University of Toronto in electronic music with Gustav Ciamaga and in composition with John Weinzweig. After completing his education, Rimmer worked as a lecturer at Auckland College of Education, North Shores Teachers College in Auckland from 1970–74 and taught at the University of Auckland from 1974–99, where he was awarded a chair in music in 1995. He served as composer-in-residence at the University of Otago in 1972 and to the Auckland Philharmonia in 2002–03. Philip Neill Memorial Prize
The Philip Neill Memorial Prize is an annual prize administered by the University of Otago for excellence in original composition. The award is open to all past and present students of a university in New Zealand, except previous winners who are excluded for a period of five years. It was established in 1943 in memory of Philip Foster Neill, a medical student at the University of Otago who died during the polio outbreak of 1943. In the first year of the prize, 1944, the topic was for a prelude (or fantasia) and fugue for either piano or organ. Douglas Lilburn was publicly awarded the first prize of £25 on 25 June 1944, with Harry Luscombe of Auckland the runner-up. It is the longest continuously running award of its kind in New Zealand. The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) is a symphony orchestra based in Auckland, New Zealand. Its principal concert venue is the Auckland Town Hall. The APO is the accompanying ensemble for performances by New Zealand Opera, NZ Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet in Auckland. Auckland Choral (formally the Auckland Choral Society) is a choir based in Auckland, New Zealand. It is New Zealand's oldest surviving arts organisation and Auckland's only symphonic-scale choir.
