David Chiwanga
David Chiwanga was a Malawian Member of Parliament who was one of the ''Mwanza Four''. He was the MP for the Chikwawa District and was thought to be a secret critic of President Kamuzu Banda. He disappeared in 1983 together with three cabinet ministers: Dick Matenje, Aaron Gadama, and Twaibu Sangala. Chikwawa District
Chikwawa is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi. The capital is Chikwawa. The district covers an area of 4,755 km² and has a population of 356,682. Kamuzu Banda
Hastings Kamuzu Banda (1898 – 25 November 1997) was the Prime Minister of Malawi, prime minister and later President of Malawi, president of Malawi from 1964 to 1994 (from 1964 to 1966, Malawi was an independent Dominion / Commonwealth realm). In 1966, the country became a republic and he became the first president as a result. After receiving much of his education in ethnography, linguistics, history, and medicine overseas, Banda returned to Nyasaland to speak against colonialism and advocate independence from the United Kingdom. He was formally appointed Prime Minister of Nyasaland, and led the country to independence in 1964. Two years later, he proclaimed Malawi a republic with himself as the first president. He consolidated power and later declared Malawi a one-party state under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). In 1970, the MCP made him the party's President for Life. Dick Matenje
Dick Matenje (died 1983) was a former Malawian politician and cabinet minister. He was the secretary-general of the Malawi Congress Party. He was one of the 'Mwanza Four' who mysteriously died during the Kamuzu Banda regime. Death Matenje was Minister of Finance from 1972 to 1978. He mysteriously died in 1983, along with ministers Twaibu Sangala, Aaron Gadama and Member of Parliament David Chiwanga. The four were collectively known as the ' Mwanza Four'. They were known to be critical of aspects of the totalitarian rule of Kamuzu Banda. They died mysteriously in 1983. Their death was ruled as a traffic accident by the Kamuzu Banda regime, although independent investigations indicate that this may have not the case. Aaron Gadama
Aaron Eliot Gadama was a former Malawian cabinet Minister and one of the 'Mwanza Four'. He was born in Kasungu District and is thought to be a relative of President Kamuzu Banda. He was a Minister for the Central Region, and a Leader of the House. He was one of the original trustees of Press Trust. He died mysteriously in 1983 together with Ministers Dick Matenje, and Twaibu Sangala as well as Member of parliament, David Chiwanga. Their bodies were found in Mozambique. The Banda government reported his death as a 'traffic accident. Twaibu Sangala
Twaibumohamedi John Twaibu Sangala was a Malawian cabinet Minister and one of the Mwanza four. He was from Dedza district Traditional Authority Tambala (the same location where his remains were laid to rest). The function was organised by the then ruling party UNITED DEMOCRATIC FRONT (UDF) under the leadership of Bakili Muluzi, the first democratically elected president in Malawi He was the Minister of Health for Malawi.
