David C. Cross Jr.
David C. Cross Jr. (December 19, 1935 - May 29, 2019) was a Canadian-born Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame trainer of Thoroughbred racing, Thoroughbred racehorses who race-conditioned the Canadian-bred colt Sunny's Halo to wins in the 1983 Kentucky Derby, Arkansas Derby and Super Derby. David Cross was raised in the Victoria, British Columbia, Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia areas and saddled his first winner in 1957 at Longacres, Longacres racetrack. He made his second appearance in the Kentucky Derby in 1991, finishing sixth with Quintana. In his only other Triple Crown appearance, for owner Gary Garber he trained Classic Cat to a third-place finish in the 1998 Preakness Stakes. David Cross retired in 2000 but returned to training Thorughbreds in 2004 before retiring permanently on July 23, 2012, saddling his last runner that day at Fort Erie Race Track. The La Cañada Stakes is a Grade III American thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age four-years-old and older over a distance of one-and-one-sixteenth miles on the dirt track held annually in January at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, USA. The event currently offers a purse of US$200,000. History The event was named after a 1843 Mexican land grant known as Rancho La Cañada in the San Rafael Hills and Crescenta Valley of Southern California. The name means "ranch of the canyon". Sunny's Halo
Sunny's Halo (February 11, 1980 – June 3, 2003) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1983 Kentucky Derby. In 1986, Sunny's Halo was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Background Foaled at Oshawa, Ontario, Sunny's Halo was owned and bred by Toronto stockbroker David J. Foster. He was trained by David Cross Jr. Racing career The horse won 7 of 11 races at age two but stress fractures in both front shins ended his season earlier than planned. Nonetheless, his performance earned him a 1982 Sovereign Award. In an attempt to heal the ankle problem, he was one of the first horses to be treated at the equine indoor swimming pool designed and built in the early 1970s by Jesse Reynolds. Canadian Horse Racing Hall Of Fame
The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame was established in 1976 to honour those who have made a significant contribution to the sport of harness and Thoroughbred horse racing in Canada. In the United States, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a series of horse races for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years, the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875. The Triple Crown Trophy, commissioned in 1950 but awarded to all previous winners as well as those after 1950, is awarded to a horse who wins all three races and is thereafter designated as a Triple Crown winner. Oklahoma Derby
The Oklahoma Derby is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three years olds, over a distance of miles (9 furlongs) on the dirt held annually late September at Remington Park located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The event currently carries an offered purse of $400,000. History The inaugural running of the event was on 18 March 1989 as the Remington Park Derby held over the miles distance and was won by the Oklahoma bred Clever Trevor in a time 1:43.00. The Ohio Derby is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in mid-to-late June at Thistledown in North Randall, Ohio. The Grade III stakes for three-year-olds is run on dirt over a distance of 1 miles. The race currently offers a purse of $500,000. Inaugurated in 1876 at Chester Park, a racetrack on Spring Grove Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio, the race was canceled after the 1883 running. Lexington Stakes
The Lexington Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt run annually in April during at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky during their spring meeting. The event currently offers a purse of $400,000. History First running of the event was on 24 October 1936, closing day of Keeneland's inaugural fall meeting as a six furlong race for two-year-olds and was won by Manhasset Stable's White Tie who ran as an entry with Greentree Stable's Tattered (finished 5th) winning by in a time of 1:12 flat.
