David Blair (dancer)
David Blair (27 July 1932 – 1 April 1976) was a British ballet dancer and a star of England's Royal Ballet during the 1950s and 1960s. Early life and training Born David Butterfield in Halifax, Yorkshire, he started taking ballet lessons after watching his sister in a class at their local dance school. He won a scholarship to the Sadler's Wells Ballet School in London and began training there in 1946, when he was 14. As he was very short in comparison with many of his classmates, Blair's acceptance into the school was on the understanding that he had to grow significantly during his first term or he would receive injections of growth-inducing hormones. Although he grew enough to satisfy the staff of the school, he was still one of the shortest boys in his class. Consequently, his teachers thought that he would become a character dancer. David Blair is a British film and television director. He has received a BAFTA award for ''The Street.'' Blair directed ''Common'', a 2014 BBC One 90-minute made-for-television drama, written by Jimmy McGovern and starring Michelle Fairley, Nico Mirallegro and Michael Gambon, which sought to question some of the issues and challenges raised by England's common purpose legal doctrine. During 2014 Blair completed the feature film ''The Messenger'' (released 2015), starring Robert Sheehan, Lily Cole, Tamzin Merchant, Joely Richardson and David O'Hara. His 2016 feature film ''Away'' starred Timothy Spall, Juno Temple, Matt Ryan and Susan Lynch. David Blair (4 June 1820 – 19 February 1899) was an Irish Australian politician, journalist and encyclopedist. Background David Blair was born in County Monaghan, Ireland to parents of Scotland, Scottish descent. He studied at the Hibernian Military School, Dublin. He left in 1835, aged 15 years and worked in an uncle's business but did not enjoy it. In 1840 he joined the Ordnance Survey of Ireland as a Human computer, calculator stationed in Limerick and then Cork (city), Cork. He transferred to Southampton in 1841 and for almost nine years he worked on the triangulation of England and the survey of London. Career His first feature, the 1991 cult hit ''Wax or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees'', was funded with public arts grants, and a co-production with ZDF, German Television. After European broadcast, a 16mm print opened theatrically to excellent reviews at the Public Theater in New York, and then copies of that print played cinemas in 26 U.S. cities, further copying themselves for later theatrical play in Japan and Australia. David Arthur Blair MBE, MC (25 August 1917 – 10 April 1985) was a Scottish amateur golfer. He finished in the top-10 in the Open Championship in 1960 and played in the Walker Cup in 1955 and 1961. He was a retired major in the Seaforth Highlanders in the British Army. His younger brother Chandos was also in the Seaforth Highlanders. Early life Blair was educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Military career Blair graduated from Sandhurst on 26 August 1937 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders, a line infantry regiment of the British Army. He was captured at El Adem in 1942 but escaped in 1943. David Blair (or Davy) (11 November 1874 – 10 January 1955) was a British merchant seaman with the White Star Line, which had reassigned him from the RMS ''Titanic'' just before its maiden voyage. Due to his hasty departure, he accidentally kept a key to a storage locker believed to contain the binoculars intended for use by the crow's nest lookout. David G. Blair (born 1946) is an Australian physicist and professor at the University of Western Australia and Director of the Australian International Gravitational Research Centre. Blair works on methods for the detection of gravitational waves. He developed the niobium bar gravitational wave detector NIOBE, which achieved the lowest observed noise temperature, and participated in a worldwide collaboration that set the best limit on the burst events in 2001. He has been responsible for numerous innovations including the 1984 invention of the first sapphire clock, a super-precise timepiece designed for space, as well as underpinning the research of the Frequency Stability Group at The University of Western Australia.
