Davey Whitney Complex
Davey Whitney Complex is a 7,000-seat multi-purpose arena and physical education center in Lorman, Mississippi. It was built in 1975 and is home to the Alcorn State University Braves men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team. The Physical Education Complex was built at a cost of $3.5 million. The new facility added much-needed seating capacity and classroom space, as well as an Olympic-size swimming pool. The first game in the complex was the final game of the 1974–75 men's basketball season. Nicknamed the "Scalping Grounds", stylized later as the Scalpin' Grounds, it was renamed in 1993 after Davey Whitney, who coached the Braves from 1969 to 1989. Whitney returned to Alcorn for a second stint from 1996 to 2003, making him one of the few Division I coaches to have coached in an arena or stadium named for him. Alcorn State University
Alcorn State University (Alcorn State, ASU or Alcorn) is a public historically black land-grant university adjacent to Lorman, Mississippi. It was founded in 1871 and was the first black land grant college established in the United States. One of Alcorn's most notable graduates, Medgar Evers, a civil rights activist, graduated in 1952. Students and alumni of the college were part of the mid-twentieth century Civil Rights Movement, working to register voters and end inequality in the U.S. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Davey Whitney
Davey Lee Whitney Sr. (January 8, 1930 – May 10, 2015), also known as "The Wiz", was an American college basketball coach and the head basketball coach at Texas Southern University from 1964 to 1969 and Alcorn State University from 1969 to 1989 and 1996 to 2003. He amassed a total record of 566 wins and 356 losses in 33 years of coaching at these institutions.
