Dave Matthews (saxophonist)
Dave Matthews (June 6, 1911 – 1997) was an American jazz saxophonist active principally in the swing era. Early life and education Matthews was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and raised in McAlester, Oklahoma. He attended the University of Oklahoma and Chicago Musical College. Career Matthews started out as an alto saxophonist with Ben Pollack in 1935, with Jimmy Dorsey from 1936 to 1937, with Benny Goodman from 1937 to 1939, Harry James from 1939 to 1941, and Hal McIntyre from 1941 to 1942. He then played tenor saxophone with Woody Herman (1942/43), Stan Kenton and Charlie Barnet (1944). He arranged for many of these groups, and continued working as an arranger in New York and California into the 1960s, with Duke Ellington among others. Occasionally he played with his own bands, including at Lake Tahoe in the 1970s. He made recordings with the big bands of Bud Freeman, Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Noone, Jack Teagarden, and Hot Lips Page. David Matthews (born March 4, 1942), is an American keyboardist, pianist, and arranger.Allmusic/ref> Early life and education Matthews was born David Richard Matthews in Sonora, Kentucky. He earned a bachelor's degree in composition from the University of Cincinnati. Career Matthews has composed television soundtracks as well as albums with the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra. He is the leader of the Manhattan Jazz Quintet. Matthews was also the leader of the musical group the Grodeck Whipperjenny. In 1970, he began working as both an arranger and bandleader for James Brown. Matthews has worked with many musicians, including Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Rich, Idris Muhammad, and the Starland Vocal Band. He was staff arranger for Creed Taylor's CTI Records label in the mid-1970s, working on albums for artists such as George Benson, Esther Phillips, Grover Washington Jr., Hank Crawford, and Idris Muhammad. David Matthews (born 9 March 1943) is an English composer of mainly orchestral, chamber, vocal and piano works. Life Matthews was born in London into a family that was musical, though not formally trained; the desire to compose did not manifest itself until he was sixteen, and for a time he and his younger brother Colin Matthews, also a composer, were each other's only teachers. The start of the 'Mahler boom' in the early 1960s, when the works of Gustav Mahler began to enter the regular British repertoire for the first time, provided a tremendous creative impetus for both of them; but although they have sometimes since collaborated as arrangers (in orchestrating seven early Mahler songs, for instance) and as editors (in the published version of Deryck Cooke's 'performing version' of the draft of Mahler's Tenth Symphony), as composers they have very much gone their separate ways. David Mathews
David Mathews ( – July 28, 1800) was an American lawyer and politician from New York City. He was a Loyalist during the American Revolutionary War and was the 43rd and last Colonial Mayor of New York City from 1776 until 1783. As New York City was the center of British control of the Colonies during the war, he was one of the highest ranking civilian authorities in the Colonies during this period. He was accused of supporting a plan led by Thomas Hickey to kill the Revolutionary General George Washington. He resettled in Nova Scotia after the war, and became a leading political figure in the Cape Breton colony that was created in 1786. David Matthews (1868 – 26 February 1960) was a Liberal Party politician in the United Kingdom. Parliamentary politics Matthews was elected as a Coalition Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Swansea East (UK Parliament constituency) at a by-election in 1919 following the death of the Liberal MP Thomas Jeremiah Williams. He stepped down from Parliament at the 1922 general election, and did not stand again. Welsh MP Matthews was a strong supporter of the premiership of David Lloyd George and regarded himself as something of a Welsh nationalist. In 1920 he was one of a group of Welsh MPs who called on the prime minister to create the post of Secretary of State for Wales but Lloyd George apparently urged them to fight for greater devolution instead. David Joseph Matthews (17 April 1937 – 19 June 2019) was an English rugby union flanker who played a record 502 games for Leicester Tigers from 1955 to 1974 as well as for Leicestershire, Midlands Counties (East) and the Barbarians. At Leicester he was also a coach, director and was a life member. Playing career Matthews joined Tigers direct from Oakham School making his debut as an 18 year old on 3 September 1955 against Bedford at Welford Road. He took a while to establish himself in the club's first team playing only 9 matches over the next 2 seasons but became a regular in the 1957/58 season playing 32 games. David Matthews (born 9 April 1974) is an Irish former middle-distance runner specialising in the 800 metres. He was born in Leixlip, County Kildare and attended University College, Dublin. At his favoured distance, he won the consecutive national titles outdoors in 1994–5–6–7 and indoors in 1993–4–5, He won the bronze medal at the 1993 European Junior Championships, reached the semifinal of the 1996 Olympics and the heats of the 2000 Olympics. David Mathews (born 25 May 1977) is a retired England, English field hockey player. He was part of the England squad that competed at the Hockey at the 2002 Commonwealth Games – Men's tournament, 2002 Commonwealth Games. He now teaches at Gordon’s School. David Matthews (born 20 November 1965) is an English former footballer who played as a forward. Career Matthews began his career at West Ham United, signing his first professional deal with the club on 29 November 1982. Matthews failed to break into the first team at West Ham, making 56 appearances for the reserves, scoring eleven times, over the course of four seasons. Following his time at West Ham, Matthews dropped into non-League football, signing for Basildon United. In November 1987, Walsall signed Matthews. Failing to make an appearance for Walsall, Matthews returned back down south, signing for Southend United in March 1988. At Southend, Matthews made six Football League appearances. David Matthews (born November 8, 1967) is an American author and screenwriter. Matthews is of African American and Jewish descent. His memoir ''Ace of Spades'' recounts growing up in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland as a biracial child who could pass for white. Matthews' Jewish mother had schizophrenia and left his father when Matthews was only a few months old. As a result, Matthews was raised by his father, Ralph Matthews, Jr., an African American journalist who counted Malcolm X and James Baldwin among his friends. The Matthews family lived in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., but in 1977 moved next to the segregated Bolton Hill area of Baltimore, a tiny enclave of rich, white families, which was surrounded by the primarily black ghetto of west Baltimore.
