Data Over Signalling
Data over signalling (sometimes data over signaling) or DoS, is a technique in telecommunications in which primary data is sent over a signalling channel instead of the subscriber's bearer channel. Background Data over signalling was designed as a solution to the problem of transceiving simultaneous voice and data. Data over signalling can be utilized when the signalling channel is either channel associated or common. However, it is easier to implement when the signalling channel is channel associated, as the system does not have to demultiplex the data and signalling between multiple subscribers. In telecommunication, signaling is the use of signals for controlling communications. This may constitute an information exchange concerning the establishment and control of a telecommunication circuit and the management of the network. Classification Signaling systems may be classified based on several principal characteristics. Bearer Channel
A bearer channel is a DS-0 that carries call content i.e. one that does not carry signaling. In the common-channel signaling scheme for telecommunications, signaling is sent out-of-band, while all other traffic rides bearer channels. When a call is set up, the Bearer Capability is negotiated, and this is used to determine what type of traffic is sent across the bearer channel. Simultaneous Voice And Data
In telecommunications, a system that supports simultaneous voice and data (SVD) is one that can transceive both voice and primary data concurrently over one PSTN modem. Background Before telecommunication networks began to support data related services, the bearer channel was dedicated solely to voice information. When support for data related services was originally released, the bearer channel was switched between being dedicated to voice information or dedicated to primary data information, depending on the subscriber's needs at any given time. Channel Associated Signaling
Channel-associated signaling (CAS), also known as ''per-trunk signaling'' (PTS), is a form of digital communication signaling. As with most telecommunication signaling methods, it uses routing information to direct the payload of voice or data to its destination. With CAS, this routing information is encoded and transmitted in the same channel as the payload itself. This information can be transmitted in the same band (in-band signaling) or a separate band (out-of-band signaling) to the payload. Call setup will be comparatively slower since signaling channels are shared thus congestion can be faced. CAS potentially results in lower available bandwidth for the payload. For example, in the PSTN the use of out-of-band signaling within a fixed bandwidth reduces a 64 kbit/s DS0 to 56 kbit/s. In telecommunication, common-channel signaling (CCS), or common-channel interoffice signaling (CCIS), is the transmission of control information ''(signaling)'' via a separate channel than that used for the messages, The signaling channel usually controls multiple message channels.
