Data ONTAP
ONTAP or Data ONTAP or Clustered Data ONTAP (cDOT) or Data ONTAP 7-Mode is NetApp's proprietary operating system used in storage disk arrays such as NetApp NetApp FAS, FAS and AFF, ONTAP Select, and Cloud Volumes ONTAP. With the release of version 9.0, NetApp decided to simplify the Data ONTAP name and removed the word "Data" from it, and remove the 7-Mode image, therefore, ONTAP 9 is the successor of Clustered Data ONTAP 8. ONTAP includes code from BSD ''Net/2'' and ''4.4BSD-Lite'', Spinnaker Networks technology, and other operating systems. ONTAP originally only supported NFS, but later added support for Server Message Block, SMB, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel Protocol (including Fibre Channel over Ethernet and NVM Express#NVMeOF, FC-NVMe). On June 16, 2006, NetApp released two variants of Data ONTAP, namely Data ONTAP 7G and, with nearly a complete rewrite, Data ONTAP GX.
