Darvel Music Festival
Darvel Music Festival is a music festival that has been held in the town of Darvel, East Ayrshire, Ayrshire, Scotland, since 2002. The Darvel Music Festival is a community-led initiative, managed and supported by the Darvel Music Company. It features ten days of music with seven concerts and twenty five international and national performers at Darvel Town Hall. The festival, which occurs during the month of May, began to run bi-annually in 2009. People from not only the Irvine Valley near Darvel, Scotland, but elsewhere in the United Kingdom and the world attend the festival—increasing tourism and benefitting the economy in the area. Darvel
Darvel ( sco, Dairvel, gd, Darbhail) is a small town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It is at the eastern end of the Loudoun, Irvine Valley and is sometimes referred to as "The Lang Toon" ( en, the Long Town). The town's Latin motto, , means "Not for ourselves, but for others". Location Darvel is situated on the A71 road that runs from Irvine on the west coast to Edinburgh on the east. The town is east of Kilmarnock and is the most easterly of the Irvine Valley Towns, the others being Galston, East Ayrshire, Galston and Newmilns. The town was once linked with Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, Stonehouse (via Strathaven) by the Caledonian Railway. However, the line was closed by the LMS before the Second World War. The Jayhawks
The Jayhawks are an American alternative country and country rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene in the mid-1980s. Led by vocalists/guitarists/songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson (musician), Mark Olson, their country rock sound was influential on many bands who played the Twin Cities circuit during the 1980s and 1990s, such as Uncle Tupelo, the Gear Daddies and the Honeydogs. They have released eleven studio albums, with and without Olson (who left the band for the first time in 1995), including five on the American Recordings (US), American Recordings label. Homecoming Scotland 2009 was a series of events designed to attract people of Scottish ancestry to visit Scotland. The campaign, organised by EventScotland and VisitScotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, and part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, claimed that "for every single Scot in their native land, there are thought to be at least five more overseas who can claim Scottish ancestry." 2009 was the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, the national poet. Francella Ruby Turner MBE (born 22 June 1958) is a British Jamaican R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and actress. In a music career spanning more than 30 years, Turner is best known for her album and single releases in Europe and North America. Martin Taylor, MBE (born 20 October 1956) is a British jazz guitarist who has performed in groups, guitar ensembles, and as an accompanist. Biography Early life Taylor was born in Harlow, Essex, into a family with a musical heritage and a Gypsy tradition. At the age of four, he received his first guitar from his father, jazz bassist William 'Buck' Taylor who only took up music at 30. Buck frequently played the music of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, so the young Martin Taylor became inspired by guitarist Django Reinhardt. At age eight, he was already playing in his father's band and at 15 he quit school to become a professional musician. Maggie Bell
Margaret Bell (born 12 January 1945 in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland) is a Scottish rock vocalist. She came to fame as co-lead vocalist of the blues-rock group Stone the Crows, and was described as the UK's closest counterpart to American singer Janis Joplin. Bell was also prominently featured as a guest vocalist on the song "Every Picture Tells a Story" (1971) by Rod Stewart. Hey Negrita (band)
Hey Negrita were an English country blues band formed in London in 2002. They were named after the song " Hey Negrita", from the 1976 album ''Black and Blue'' by the Rolling Stones. The band, which consisted of Felix Bechtolsheimer (guitar and vocals), Matthew Ord (guitar and vocals), Neil Findlay (drums), William Greener (harmonica and vocals), Paul Sandy (bass) and Paul Tkachenko (accordion, banjo, keyboards, mandolin, sousaphone and vocals), released four studio albums and various singles. The lineup, which included Hugo Heimann for the first two albums, underwent several changes. Jim Mullen (born 26 November 1945) is a Scottish, Glasgow-born jazz guitarist with a distinctive style, like Wes Montgomery before him, picking with the thumb rather than a plectrum. Biography Jim Mullen was guitarist with Pete Brown & Piblokto! for two albums in 1970. He then played with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, appearing on the band's first three albums together with future Average White Band drummer Robbie McIntosh. Mullen then joined Kokomo and later toured with the Average White Band. Hamilton Michael Loomis (born November 1, 1975) is an American electric blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. One of his eight albums released to date, ''Ain't Just Temporary'', peaked at number 7 in the ''Billboard'' Top Blues Albums Chart in September 2007. Mark Olson (born September 18, 1961 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is an American musician and singer-songwriter. He was a founding member of alternative country bands The Jayhawks and the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers. Career Olson formed the Jayhawks in 1985 with singer and guitarist Gary Louris and was originally the principal singer-songwriter in the group. Their first album for Def American was the Drakoulias-produced ''Hollywood Town Hall'' in 1992. After a successful single, "Waiting for the Sun", and extensive touring the band went back in the studio and released the follow-up, ''Tomorrow the Green Grass'' in 1995, which yielded the radio hit "Blue".
