Darton is a large village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley (part of South Yorkshire), on the border with West Yorkshire, England. At the time of the 2001 UK census, it had a population of 14,927, increasing to 21,345 for both Darton Wards (East & West) at the 2011 Census. Parliamentary representation Formerly part of the now defunct Barnsley West and Penistone borough constituency, following the Boundary Commission for England's report on South Yorkshire's Parliamentary constituencies in 2004 and an inquiry in 2005, it is now part of the Barnsley Central borough constituency. All Saints Church, Darton
The Church of All Saints is the parish church in the village of Darton in South Yorkshire, England. It is a Church of England church in the Diocese of Leeds. The 16th-century building is and was built on the site of an earlier church from 1150. History The villages of Darton and Kexbrough actually appear in the Domesday Book in 1086 (Dertune and Chizeburg) but the earliest record of the church appears in 1150. The Norman church was built by John de Laci, Earl of Lincoln and Sir John de Sothill, feudal lords of the Manor of Darton. The patronage of the church remained In the hands of the de Laci family and passed from them to the King, as Duke of Lancaster. Darton Academy
Darton Academy is a coeducational secondary school located in Darton in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The school provides education for more than 1,200 pupils in Years 7 to 11. The school is located to the north west of Barnsley in the village of Kexbrough on the edge of the open countryside approximately one mile from junction 38 of the M1 motorway. History Darton Hall Senior School was opened in the village of Darton in 1935, providing senior education for 560 pupils of both sexes. In 1957, buildings were opened at the current Kexborough site, which then became the boys' campus, with girls remaining at Darton. In the 1970s, preparations for the changes to comprehensive education in the area, combined with the raising of the school leaving age led to considerable developments at the Kexborough campus. Darton Railway Station
Darton railway station is a railway station in Darton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Train services are provided by Northern. The station was opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway on 1 January 1850. The railway station is in South Yorkshire but West Yorkshire Metro tickets are also valid to and from this station. The reason for this is that the West-South Yorkshire boundary historically ran between the village and its main source of employment, Woolley Colliery. The car park at the station was recently reported by the local police force as having the highest incidence of vehicle break-ins in the Barnsley area, but the installation of CCTV is hoped to address this problem. River Dearne
The River Dearne South Yorkshire, England flows roughly east for more than , from its source just inside West Yorkshire. It flows through Denby Dale, Clayton West, Darton, Barnsley, Darfield, Wath upon Dearne, Bolton on Dearne, Adwick upon Dearne and Mexborough to its confluence with the River Don at Denaby Main. Its main tributary is the River Dove, which joins it at Darfield. The river was one of those affected by the 2007 United Kingdom floods. The course of the river is accessible to walkers as the Dearne Way, a long distance footpath from ''Dearne Head'' to the river's junction with the Don. Places of interest along the Dearne include the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton, and Monk Bretton Priory. The Dearne Valley below Barnsley is a regeneration area. The Hallam Line is a railway connecting Leeds and Sheffield via Castleford in the West Yorkshire Metro area of northern England. It is a slower route from Leeds to Sheffield than the Wakefield line. Mapplewell is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, England. Formerly part of the now defunct Barnsley West and Penistone borough constituency, following the Boundary Commission for England's report on South Yorkshire's Parliamentary constituencies in 2004 and the subsequent inquiry in 2005, it is now part of the Barnsley Central borough constituency.
