Dartchery
Dartchery (a combination of darts and archery which uses a dart board instead of a standard archery target) was contested at the Summer Paralympic Games from 1960 to 1980. Competitions were carried out in pairs: mixed pairs from 1960 to 1980, and men's pairs and women's pairs from 1972 to 1980. Though the participants and results have, for the most part, been recorded by the International Paralympic Committee, the scores obtained by competitors have not. Results by Games 1960 Dartchery was one of the eight sports contested at the inaugural Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960. Only three pairs of athletes competed, and therefore all won a medal. Jack Whitman and Wayne Broeren of the United States defeated their compatriots Jim Mathis and John Tigyer, as well as French competitors Camille Trouverie and Bernabei, to win gold. The United States competed at the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv, Israel from November 4 to 13, 1968. The team finished first out of the twenty-eight competing nations in the medal table and won ninety-nine medals: thirty-three gold, twenty-seven silver and thirty-nine bronze. Margaret Harriman
Margaret Harriman is a Paralympic athlete from South Africa. She was born in Great Britain. She was the only lady to compete in the netball tournament of the second Stoke Mandeville Games in 1949 under her maiden name of Margaret Webb. From 1960 to 1976 she competed in the Summer Paralympics in many sports, including archery, athletics, dartchery, lawn bowls and swimming. She represented Rhodesia in her first two Paralympics and then South Africa since 1968, winning eleven gold medals. Between 1960 and 1968 she won an impressive eight gold medals in archery. In 1976 she became ineligible to compete after South Africa was banned from the games because of its policy on apartheid. Jack Whitman
Jack Whitman (died September 30, 2004) was an American paralympic archer and dartcher. He competed at the 1960 and 1964 Summer Paralympics, Biography Whitman was raised on a farm in Galesburg, Illinois. He attended Galesburg High School, where he played football and track athletics, graduating in 1948. After graduating, Whitman attended the University of Illinois in 1949, where he became paralyzed in an accident while competing in the gymnastics team. He returned to the University of Illinois in 1952. He took up archery after a neighbor provided him with a bow and arrow in 1960. Whitman participated at the 1960 Summer Paralympics, with participating in the first archery competition at the Paralympic Games. He was awarded the gold medal in the men's FITA round open event. Kevin Bawden
Kevin Wayne Bawden Order of Australia, AM (born 1946) is an Australian Paralympics competitor in six sports and a leading disability sports administrator in Australia. Personal Bawden was born in 1946 and lives in Adelaide, South Australia. He contracted polio at the age of four and at the age of 18 became involved in sport. He was employed with the Australian Government in several management roles for thirty five years until in 2001. From 2001 to 2006, he was the chief executive officer of a not-for-profit organisation in Adelaide. Sports career Bawden participated in four Summer Paralympics, three as an athlete and one as an official and coach. At the 1968 Summer Paralympics, 1968 Tel Aviv Games, he participated in archery, dartchery, lawn bowls, table tennis, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair fencing. Australia competed at the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Games significantly expanded in 1968 when compared to previous years, as did the Australian team and the events included in the Games. Mexico City were originally to host the 1968 Paralympics, however, they were moved to Tel Aviv in Israel. Roy Fowler (Paralympian)
Roy Fowler (22 March 1920 – 19 September 2002) was an Australian Paralympic competitor, who won ten medals at six Paralympics from 1964 to 1988. Personal Fowler was born in Brisbane. He played rugby league and competed in swimming for his school until he was twelve, when he went to the outback to work at a drover's camp during the Great Depression. At the age of fourteen, he had his first professional fight. During World War II, he was a gunner in the 2/2 Tank Attack Regiment of the Australian Army, and after the war, he toured Australia as part of a tag team professional wrestling circuit. In 1963 he had a cerebral haemorrhage after a coalmining accident, and became a quadriplegic. He spent six months in the spinal unit of the Princess Alexandra Hospital and then went to the Kingshome Rehabilitation Centre, where he was introduced to wheelchair sport.
