Darr Mine Disaster
The Darr Mine disaster at Van Meter, Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, near Smithton, Pennsylvania, Smithton, killed 239 men and boys on December 19, 1907. It ranks as the worst coal mining disaster in Pennsylvanian history. Many victims were of immigrants from central Europe, including Rusyns, Hungarians (including Slovaks from Gemer and Abov - then part of Austria-Hungary), Austrians, Germans, Polish people, Poles and Italians. The mine was operated by the Pittsburgh Coal Company. It was located on the west side of the Youghiogheny River and along the route of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. Fayette City
Fayette City is a borough in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 502 at the 2020 census, a decline from the figure of 596 tabulated in 2010. It is served by the Belle Vernon Area School District. Some buildings in the town antedate 1820. The Naomi Mine explosion occurred on December 1, 1907, in the Naomi Mine, approximately from Fayette City, Pennsylvania. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 35 miners and left no survivors. Naomi Mine The Naomi Mine was operated by Hillman Coal and Coke Company.
