Darling Range Hotel was a hotel in Bellevue, Western Australia, on the end of the slope on the Great Eastern Highway at the 'bottom of' Greenmount, Western Australia, Greenmount Hill and just north of the former Bellevue railway station, Perth, Bellevue railway station, and over the road from the Helena Vale Racecourse. The locality known earlier as 'Helena Vale, Western Australia, Helena Vale' and 'East Midland', was near the border of the council in the hills above 'Greenmount Road Board' - (now Shire of Mundaring), and the 'Midland Junction Council' (now City of Swan). In the First World War, it was the nearest hotel to the Blackboy Hill, Western Australia, Blackboy Hill army camp It was started as the East Midland Hotel, on the earlier name for the highway - the York Road, Western Australia, York Road. York Road, Western Australia
York Road (currently known in parts as the ''Old York Road'') was the main road connecting Guildford and York, in Western Australia, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Its origins in a talk in 1929 claim an earlier name ''King Dick Road'', and the first settlers usage of the route being on 6 September 1831. It became, in the 20th century, portions of the Great Eastern Highway, and the portion of the road traversing the Darling Scarp at Greenmount was named the Old York Road. The re-aligned Great Eastern Highway removed some of the problems of the steep grades along the old alignment. The road name was also a truncation of the usage of the name ''Old York-Perth Road''. The York Road had convict era sites along its traverse. In the metropolitan area, Chippers Leap, Bilgoman Well, Mahogany Inn (still operating), and other sites have connections with that era, and the remaining original section on Greenmount Hill is still named ''Old York Road''. Midland is a suburb in the Perth metropolitan region, as well as the regional centre for the City of Swan local government area that covers the Swan Valley and parts of the Darling Scarp to the east. It was printed by William Heller at 184 Barrack St, Perth, and published at The Crescent, Midland Junction. It was established by Frederick Davis, who had previously worked as the second in charge at ''The Sunday Chronicle''. Background Until 1916, the masthead read "conducted by John Norton"; then between 1916 and 1920, it read "conducted by John Norton's Trustees". ''Truth'' was an established newspaper published in Sydney and owned by William Willis, Adolphus Taylor and Patrick Crick. Norton worked for ''Truth'' and became editor and part-owner in 1891, but he was soon dismissed for repeated drunkenness. Through extensive litigation, Norton acquired the newspaper in 1896.
